BMW Plant Hams Hall is a state-of-the-art, modern engine production facility manufacturing small, low emission and fuel efficient engines for the BMW Group. The plant, located in the United Kingdom, near to Birmingham, plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines in the exact sequence they are required to a number of vehicle manufacturing plants around the world.

The plant officially opened in 2001 and was the first BMW engine plant to be built outside of Germany and Austria, recognising the importance of the UK as a major world economy and one of BMW Group’s largest markets.

An innovative design and manufacturing concept - VALVETRONIC (a variable valve lift concept) – set new standards for the first engine that was launched at the Hams Hall plant. Typical BMW refinement and dynamic drive performance was maintained, but with significantly reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions.  This technology is now a standard technical feature, and with design evolutions through various new engine families, for over a decade Plant Hams Hall has a sustained and successful track record of manufacturing over 3.5 million small, low emission and fuel efficient engines for both BMW and MINI cars.

Today, the plant employs over 800 people, including 38 apprentices, and builds a range of engine derivatives across two engine families.  There is also a large machining operation of crankshafts, cylinder blocks and cylinder heads both for its own engine production as well as supply to other BMW Group and collaboration partner plants.

As part of an investment programme in its UK manufacturing facilities, BMW Group has recently made significant developments in the Hams Hall plant. Brand-new production facilities have been installed to ensure the plant is equipped to continue production of the next generation of engines. Already, production of a brand-new three-cylinder petrol engine has commenced and this is supplied exclusively from Plant Hams Hall for the new BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.
