Designing the most complex vehicle on the planet is no mean feat, and the professional development offered by engineering a nuclear submarine is a once in a generation opportunity.
Would you like to play a key role in the design and development of submarines? We currently have vacancies for Engineering Managers at our site near England's distinguished Lake District.
You will be working as part of key Engineering teams such as Materials, Dynamics, Safety, Product Security, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Human Factors, Structures, Systems Engineering, Propulsion, Naval Architecture, Boat Control & Instrumentation and Communication Systems, each of which are responsible for the design and development of vital submarine structures, systems and equipment.
These varied roles will provide you with the opportunity to utilise your experience in order to lead and manager teams through a range of design activities, over the lifecycle of a submarine from setting requirements and conducting performance analysis, through writing technical specifications for subcontracted equipment to generating test procedures and reviewing evidence to prove the submarine is fit for purpose. You will also have exposure to major customers, conduct peer reviews and have future opportunities to progress within engineering management.
Your main responsibilities as an Engineering Manager will involve:
Leading and managing engineering staff; ensuring each team member is assessed, developed, deployed and skilled to maximise their personal contribution and to meet the requirements of contracts, schedules and specifications
Ensuring developed solutions are clearly defined, integrated, configured, controlled and delivered, including resolution of conflicts and integration issues that occur through development and delivery phases
Identifying resource requirements through the lifecycle of the project and managing engineering resource within agreed limits
Performing appropriate engineering planning, management and review activities to ensure products are integrated, safe, fully compliant and delivered within agreed requirements for cost, quality, time and schedule
Assuring the maturity of the developed solutions is appropriate for the specific requirement and that all technical risks and opportunities are captured
Interfacing and influencing internal and external customers and other stakeholders such that product offerings meet requirements and specifications
Ensuring that all engineering activities are undertaken in line with BAE Systems' policies
Signing off design and technical requirements for a project or service
Chairing Design Reviews and/or technical bid reviews for minor projects and providing significant contribution to larger projects
Your skills and qualifications:
Degree in relevant STEM subject
An experienced professional engineer and / or technical manager with knowledge in the relevant discipline area
Understanding of the interaction between the relevant discipline area and other disciplines
CEng or able to achieve full membership of an appropriate institution

Maritime - Submarines
Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
