Job Details

Are you an experienced electrical systems design engineer with the ability to design complex mechatronic systems? 

Do you possess an engineering or technology degree or have equivalent relevant experience? 

If so, we are seeking an electrical systems design engineer, responsible for defining the Electrical System requirements and specifications, generating layout designs and overseeing detailed design drawings within our RACE Department. 

RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) is a business unit, based at Culham, specialising in remote handling and automated systems. We design, deliver and operate remote handling solutions for extreme environments using the latest technologies in robotics and automation. 

From our brand-new purpose-built facility, the RACE team is working on several multi-year projects to design, manufacture and supply complex, innovative and yet to be conceived solutions to work in challenging environments. 

Key areas of responsibility will include: 

-Preparing electrical schematics and BOMs for new prototype equipment 
-Producing electrical systems specifications for large complex remote handling systems 
-Producing high quality layout designs for equipment enclosures and panels from schematics 
-Assisting in the testing and commissioning of systems including ensuring compliance of systems with both site and legislated safety requirements 
-Producing electrical equipment designs from specifications 
-Approves quality of design work performed by contractors 
-Maintaining and upgrading legacy plant 
-Supports project managers in preparing project bid documentation, estimating cost and timescales 
-Interpreting regulations and national requirements

Applications are welcome from less experienced candidates seeking career development who fulfil the essential criteria for the role attracting a salary range of £32,993 - £37,069 (Level 4 inclusive of MPP) or £44,959 - £50,272 (Level 5 inclusive of MPP)

Knowledge skills and experience 

Essential 
- Engineering or technology degree, or equivalent experience. 
- Extensive engineering design experience and the ability to assess and perform mechatronic design work. 
- Proven ability to interact efficiently with people in a variety of different situations. 
- Able to produce high quality work to deadlines. 
- Flexible working attitude with the ability to work as an individual or as a team member. 
- Ability to design complex mechatronic systems. 

Desirable 
- Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership. 
- Knowledge of remote handling systems and remote operations is highly desirable as is knowledge of nuclear. Operations and/or petrochemical operations. 
- Experience of maintenance of legacy equipment, reverse engineering where appropriate. 
- Ability to deliver complex engineering projects from cradle to grave. 
- Able to coach less experienced staff. 
- Understanding of governance, H&S and compliance issues. 
- Experience of working in a cross functional team. 
- Experience of working in a safety dominated working environment.
