Job Details

Are you an experienced senior mechanical technician with a background in leading small teams to achieve mechanical assembly and maintenance activities? 

Do you have a recognised engineering apprenticeship or equivalent with a relevant qualification in engineering and workshop technology? 

Have you gained demonstrable experience putting together risk assessments, method statements and written safety schema of work for a range of projects? 

If so, we have an excellent opportunity for an experienced senior mechanical technician to join our team within the Remote Application in Challenging Environments (RACE) Department working on a range of small to larger scale projects. You will ensure the generation of documentation and the supervision of a small team of mechanical technicians for the assembly and maintenance of a wide range of specialist equipment such as telemanipulators, transporters, welding, cutting, handling and inspection devices. 

Key areas of responsibility will include: 
- Write all necessary written safety schema of work, assembly procedures/method statements and risk assessments, to hold readiness review prior to task and to undertake the assembly, commissioning and rebuild activities. 
- Support maintenance activities, highlighting any areas of inconsistency ensuring equipment is functionality assembled as originally designed to maximise equipment reliability within plan and budget. 
- Offer technical support and solutions to rectify any issues that arise during the assembly process, taking the lead with the assembly and rebuild activities. 
- Supervise and lead a small team of mechanical technicians to deliver the work in a safe and effective manner during assembly and maintenance works. 
- Attend regular progress meetings with senior managers to report back to the business.

Knowledge skills and experience 

Essential: 

- Recognised engineering apprenticeship (or equivalent) with a relevant qualification in engineering and workshop technology. Qualified to HND level or have a similar level of experience in lieu of qualification. 
- Extensive experience working as a technician in an engineering environment. 
- Experienced in managing tasks in a work hall environment with formal work control. 
- Supervisory and / or direct line management experience in managing a small team of technicians, actively driving work to meet the project plan. 
- Experienced in generation of formal work control documentation. 
- Proven capability of working from detailed drawings and schematics. 
- Experience with MS Excel and MS Word. 
- Ability to co-operate and work as a part of a team. 

Desirable: 

- Previous experience in the operation of remote handling equipment would be beneficial however full training will be provided. 
- Experience in the manipulation of virtual reality models would be advantageous, however full training will be provided. 
- EngTech registration will be advantageous. 

Special requirements: 

- The appointee may be required to work in Beryllium and Radiation controlled areas. All necessary training and registration for this will be provided by UKAEA.

Selection Method(s): 

- As part of the selection process you will be expected to complete a fitting test, manufacturing a small component with basic hand tools.
