If you haven’t yet considered working in Canada, perhaps it’s time that you do. There are many excellent opportunities abroad however there’s one in particular that you as an experienced engineer ought to take a look at. Initially, you may think moving abroad is the last thing you’d want to do. The process can take a long time and there are a lot of culture differences. This all depends where you go, however major defence company L3 WESCAM is now amongst the first to use Canada's accelerated foreign worker hiring process to offer opportunities to UK engineers. Ultimately this has made the process a whole lot easier for UK engineers to head over to Canada where opportunities are rife. If you don’t think the grass is greener, you may want to think again.
L3 WESCAM is a global high-tech defence company, specialising in electro-optical and infrared technologies and solutions. They’re located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, yet they are a division of L3 Technologies, a $15 billion U.S. global defence company. If you have a passion for advanced defence technology in the aerospace industry, then L3 WESCAM could be your kind of company. Up until recently if you wanted to work in Canada you had to wait for a few months to do so. Due to the recent accelerated foreign worker hiring process, this timeframe has been taken down dramatically and you could be in your shiny new workplace in a matter of weeks. Mike Greenley, President of L3 WESCAM says: “There has always been a strong relationship with Canada and the UK with people heading back and forth with work opportunities. It used to take months to process this, now with it being two weeks, we can have exciting new candidates applying for great new jobs. The new initiative is well received.”
L3 WESCAM is located in Burlington, Ontario, which sits at the nexus of a wide range of residential communities including Toronto, Canada’s largest city, and other picturesque cities and towns offering employees their choice of urban, suburban or rural settings. These areas include Oakville, Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Guelph, Milton, and other areas along the Niagara Peninsula and Niagara Escarpment - a vital corridor of green space through south-central Ontario, and designated as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. All of these areas are within a short drive to WESCAM’s convenient location.
What are the benefits of this programme for jobseekers in the UK where there is a similar skills gap? Why should they move to L3 WESCAM in Canada?
Greenley continues: “L3 WESCAM will help people make the transition; this includes temporary accommodation that can be organised until they find a more permanent place to live. L3 WESCAM is going through an exciting period of growth – we need that help at multiple levels. We work with local colleges and universities here in Canada. Those are entry level candidates which can take time to train. Currently we need experienced workers so we’re looking across Canada and into the UK for practiced engineers. The accelerated entry programme helps this need.”
L3 WESCAM has over 42 years of experience and specialises in surveillance and targeting sensor products and integrated solutions. They sell these products domestically and internationally. Currently, 4000 MX-Series sensor systems are in-service across 74 different countries. These products are fully supported by WESCAM Authorised Service Centres which are located globally. There are 14 centres now – with more planned for later this year, and in years to come. Greenley says: “L3 WESCAM is an incredibly stable company. We’ve been doing this for a long time and in the past two years we’ve had a very positive book-to-bill ratio by having an increasing amount of orders. We have persistent growth as we continue to expand around the world. L3 WESCAM is a very stable and solid company going through its next stage of expansion.”
The company culture isn’t dissimilar to the culture of the UK’s top companies. L3 WESCAM has embraced the culture of a start-up company but has the security of a company that’s well-established. You get the best of both worlds. For example, working for L3 WESCAM you can expect to get every other Friday as a paid day off, free healthy food in the workplace as well as a subsidised canteen and an on-site gym with a selection of weight and cardio equipment. Specialised fitness classes are also offered.
When it comes to career progression, there is a tendency to look at internal candidates first for promotion to other areas; i.e. Duane Heslinga is the current VP of Engineering, had joined the company a number of years ago straight out of university. Many other examples exist like this. Greenley adds: “L3 WESCAM provides plenty of internal support to employees including training programmes to help them develop. Our work with local universities and colleges starts this process.”
