Laser Opportunities at Dstl
A government organisation. High-tech laboratories. Cutting-edge laser technology. What are you imagining? It’s probably not Dstl. But it should be, because it’s a fascinating, intriguing organisation that combines all these things – and so much more.
As the science inside defence and security, Dstl is committed to delivering world-class science and technology to the UK and its allies. Working closely with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and other government organisations, they provide expert research, advice and operational support to help ensure the safety and security of our armed forces.
Now, Dstl is seeking experienced individuals from a range of backgrounds to grow their senior cohort. In particular, there are significant opportunities available for those looking to apply their expertise to laser research and development, as part of their Platform Systems Division. Focusing on a broad range of technical research areas, this division provides evidence-based analysis and evaluates exciting new capabilities to support front line commands.
There’s a huge amount of variety to the work, which means there’s always something new to explore. You could be a laser physicist, designing systems that operate in contested airspace as part of the Electro-Optic Countermeasures team. Or perhaps you’ll be a laser engineer, shaping the next generation of Laser Directed Energy Weapons. From science and physics through to analysis and technology, it’s hands-on, unique and exciting work that you won’t find anywhere else.
Mike and Sobit, current laser specialists, said: “Our work is at the forefront of laser technology; through our international partnerships we are able to collaborate on cutting-edge research.
“This has provided us with various opportunities to suit our own interests and career goals. Through early interactions with these systems, our impact was significant right from the beginning of our careers at Dstl. Working alongside a group of subject matter experts within the LDEW community, we are continuously encouraged to be inquisitive and further our technical knowledge.”
From world-class laboratories to the decks of warships and even the edge of space, Dstl is doing some fascinating things with lasers. If you’re someone who approaches problems with a can-do attitude, and gets excited about exploring new possibilities, then a career at Dstl could be the perfect next step. You might already have military experience, work in a similar technology department in another industry, or perhaps you’re currently in academia. You’ll be seeking a career where you can explore, discover and innovate – and where your insights and ideas won’t just be heard, they’ll be encouraged.
That’s because you’ll be surrounded by experts who share your passion. As well as driving forward innovation together, you’ll discover a friendly, welcoming and supportive working culture. Plus, your individuality will be championed. Dstl has a number of employee support networks established to celebrate the diversity of the workforce – ranging from LGBTQ+ and gender equality groups, through to faith, disability and even networks for new starters, parents and carers.
Cherie and Dan, who only recently joined the laser division, said: “Despite being new to the company we are both really enjoying the roles so far and are already well integrated into the LDEW team. Our colleagues both in and outside of the team, regardless of their role, have been very supportive and approachable.
“We are both passionate about physics and lasers and this has been a fantastic opportunity to further build our careers. Both of us have been working on live research that is project critical from week one, and can both agree that our roles are truly intriguing. Our work has a meaningful effect on current UK defence research.”
Additional benefits include flexible working options – including, compressed hours and job share options – so your work-life balance is truly valued. That’s as well as having access to extensive learning and development opportunities, and the freedom to pursue your own research. It’s truly an environment where you’ll unlock your full potential.
