National Women in Engineering Day 2019
This year's theme for National Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is #TransformTheFuture, you can find this hashtag on twitter and get involved with the campaign. This is the 6th annual INWED and consides with the 100-year anniversary of The Women’s Engineering Society (WES), which was founded on the 23rd June 1919. This year, the engineering community aims to spread awareness of the influential women that have worked in engineering, past and present. As in previous years, the main aim of this campaign is to spread awareness of the lack of gender diversity in the engineering sector and get women and girls involved in the campaign and interested in STEM subjects. Here at E&TJ we understand the importance of diversity in engineering and urge you to get involved in the campaign.
In 2018, only 11% of British Engineers were women. Despite what may seem like a low percentage, women have and continue to play a significant part in the world of engineering. With 2019’s yearlong International Women’s Day #balanceforbetter campaign and the 100-year anniversary of WES, it is more important than ever to understand that women in this industry are needed and it’s vital to have the resources to educate people on their options.
So, what can you do to get involved in this year’s campaign?
- Attend or host an INWED event
- Send INWED a picture of yourself at work that can be used in our photo gallery
- Send INWED your story for our She’s an Engineer feature and get your company to feature it too (WES members & partners will be prioritised.)

International Women in Engineering Day is extremely proud to be working with UNESCO for another year. They are proud to stand by women in engineering and raise awareness on the great achievements that they have made throughout history. We need more women and girls in engineering and they will continue to make the great advancements we need.
