Professional registration can be a big milestone for some engineers and technicians. It is open to everyone that wants to apply and the IET can assist from all stages throughout your application. Registration demonstrates that you have reached a high standard of competence and shows that you are committed to your career and personal development.

When deciding whether to apply for professional registration, the IET are licenced to award four different categories and each category follows a variation of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) or ICTTech – The Standard. These include:

  1. Chartered Engineer
  2. Incorporated Engineer
  3. Engineering technician
  4. ICT Technician

Completing any of the professional registration categories comes with benefits. Just some of these include:

  • Use of an internationally protected title, e.g. Incorporated Engineer
  • Recognition as a professional in your field
  • Improved career opportunities and salary prospects
  • Greater influence within your organisation
  • Opportunities to connect with influential and inspirational people
  • International recognition of your professional competence and commitment

Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Chartered Engineers develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change and/or they may have technical accountability for complex systems with significant levels of risk.”

So why become a Chartered Engineer?

Completing your CEng demonstrates that you have been assessed and your qualifications verified. You have taken the time to make a commitment to your professional development and become a registered professional in your field of work.

To become professionally registered to this standard, you do have to have a good level of knowledge and skills to have been built through work and learning experiences. You will have to reach competence and commitment standards in order to achieve this status, but the outcome can be very rewarding for you career.

Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

Incorporated Engineers maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation.”

Being successful in your application for an Incorporated Engineer means you would have successfully had your competence assessed, your credentials verified, and you have declared your commitment to the work you do.

In order to have a successful application for any professional registration category you should have good skill and knowledge in the five general areas of assessment:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Design, development and solving engineering problems
  • Responsibility, management, or leadership
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional commitment

Engineering Technician (EngTech)

Engineering Technicians apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems.”

EngTech demonstrates your professionalism. In order to achieve this, you will be evaluated by other registered engineers and technicians. It not only declares your passion for your career but will show other employers your skills. Becoming EngTech is the next step in your career, but not the last. Registration can open up a world of opportunity and can help you become the engineer you want to be.

In order to apply you can:

  • Online through Career Manager, the IET’s online skills development and recording tool for a reduced application fee.
  • Via a paper application form which can be found on our website

ICT Technician (ICTTech)

If you work in an area that involves the support or use of ICT equipment and you want to gain official recognition for your hard work and skills, you could apply to become an ICT technician with the IET.

Just like the other three categories, becoming an ICT Technician can open up a world of opportunities and earning potential.

When you become an ICTTech, it demonstrates to your employers and clients that you have had your competence independently assessed, your credentials verified and it shows that you have the commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Did you know that many IT and engineering undergrad students can achieve the competencies needed to obtain professional registration during an industry placement year?

There is so much more you can learn about Professional registration. When you can apply, how to apply and the application process, we are here to assist with it all. You can click here to find our application form.

And, if you are already a registered engineer from a different institution you can request to transfer your professional registration from another institution to the IET if it’s been more than 12 months since your successful qualification.
