The Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre (PVRC) at the University of Bath is recruiting at either Research Associate/Research Fellow level, to be responsible for providing specific expertise in vehicle emissions systems in undertaking work for the Model Based Validation project (MB_Val) with Ford Motor Company.

The MB_Val project aims to create new methodologies that will allow Ford to improve its development and validation processes whilst faced with the new emissions legislation: Real Driving Emissions (RDE). The Research Associates/Research Fellows will be expected to undertake work for the delivery of the project work packages. These work packages will:

1.     Create and implement methods to replicate on-road driving conditions a vehicle test laboratory;

2.     Create and implement methods to replicate the vehicle within an engine or powertrain test laboratory

The postholder will be based at Ford’s site near Basildon, Essex. They will be expected to work between multiple teams within Ford whilst reporting to their line manager at the University.

This project will give a unique opportunity to integrate both a growing university research team and a leading automotive OEM. Based at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, PVRC is a leading centre for theoretical, experimental and analytical research into powertrain systems in the UK. PVRC has an excellent track record in delivering industry-relevant projects, and has long established collaborations with industrial partners. The Centre considers its remit to be all of the links in the chain from energy storage to its conversion into mechanical work on board a vehicle. The recently secured £49m investment for the Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) will propel PVRC into a global leading position. This project is expected to provide the basis for a growing collaboration between Ford and the PVRC in the context of IAAPS.

Applicants should possess a PhD degree, or an equivalent professional experience/qualification, in subject area of direct relevance for the project and have research or industrial experience. Applicants must have experience of automotive powertrain systems in the context of emissions control and legislation. Experience of delivery and involvement in collaborative research programmes between industry and academia would also be highly beneficial. Candidates should be self-motivated and possess project management and technical communication skills.

Either position is full time (36.5 hours per week) and is being offered on a fixed term contract basis with a duration of  up to15 months.

The University of Bath holds Bronze Award for Athena SWAN scheme, which promotes gender equality among all disciplines. We particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups.
