Senior Engineer - Shock and Dynamics

Would you like to be a part of the Shock and Dynamics department, supporting all major submarine platforms? We currently have two vacancies for Senior Engineers - Shock and Dynamics at our site in Barrow.

As a Senior Engineer - Shock and Dynamics, you will be either developing and justifying shock and mounting system design solutions for the support of submarine internal equipment & systems, or, be involved in providing guidance, support and advice, in deriving the shock transversal requirements, including ensuring the product can demonstrably withstand the effects of a Non-Contact Underwater Explosion.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Engineer - Shock and Dynamics will involve:

The responsibilities below are for the two individual roles.


Undertaking mounting system and structural design to provide shock and vibration isolation for Submarine equipment & systems, typically for individual items

Performing assessments of support structures, structural seats/foundations, fasteners and welds using a mixture of finite element analysis, in-house software, classical stress calculation techniques and application of standard code formulae

Supporting the shock design function through all stages of the product life cycle, including conducting detailed analysis and providing evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose

Shock Qualification

Providing specialist advice, active surveillance and representation at project design reviews to ensure compliance with shock design requirements

Supporting the production teams in the assessment and resolution of production queries & issues, coordinating the input from the wider engineering team

Being involved in the facilitation and control of technical interactions between industrial partners on matters of shock design and qualification

Support the on-going equipment shock testing activity, providing support at test facilities and where necessary, the design and co-ordination of manufacture of supporting test rigs

Your skills and qualifications:

Two essential skillset criteria are present for the roles, if you meet the criteria set in either please progress your application.


Degree or equivalent experience in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) related discipline

Experience with Finite element analysis (FEA) software

Working experience with structural design codes

Experience with equipment mounting arrangement design

Shock Qualification

Degree or equivalent experience in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) related discipline

A basic understanding of fundamental mechanical dynamic principles and an awareness of how these are applied in the design process (e.g. mass, stiffness, material properties, natural frequencies etc.)

An understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Experience with 3D CAD design interrogation and basic draughting skills would be an advantage (e.g. CADDS5, EPD Connect, Visualiser or Foran)
