Principal Product Safety Engineer
Would you like to play a key role working on unique and exciting projects delivering product safety for Torpedos? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Product Safety Engineer at our site in Broad Oak, Portsmouth.
As a Principal Product Safety Engineer you will sit within Product and Training Services (PT&S). This group works on radars, training services and torpedo manufacture and support. BAE Systems is the sole supplier of the Stingray lightweight and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes. You will support Design Authorities and Chief Engineers in managing aspects of the Safety Cases for each of these two torpedoes, considering design changes and upgrades, as well as looking at existing systems for support and maintenance issues. Your role will also provide for opportunities to support new, cutting edge work on the safety of future torpedo design.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on unique and exciting projects that will provide for future career growth and development. Spearfish in particular is currently scheduled to remain in service beyond 2050.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Product Safety Engineer will involve:
Providing credible advice and guidance to the project team on product safety, product environmental, COSHH and other occupational safety issues
Ensuring that safety and environmental considerations are an integral part of the design process and taking cognisance of the whole product lifecycle
Preparing, maintaining and managing the implementation of project Safety and Environment Management Systems evolving them where necessary to ensure that product safety can be managed in a cost-effective manner
Cultivating the safety argument for all products and services delivered by the project, employing all required facts of the product safety lifecycle as defined in the project Safety and Environment Management Plan (SEMP) and in accordance with the Maritime Services Product Safety Policy
Ensuring that the standards of Product Safety and Product Environmental defined by statutory, business and customer requirements are observed in the design of the Product(s) produced by, or resulting from the project (e.g. JSP430, JSP520, Def Stan 00-056, Def Stan 00-051)
Your skills and qualifications:
Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle with demonstrable experience of operating in most phases
Demonstrable track record of managing and delivering product safety/product environmental tasks
Experienced in ensuring design reviews and technical bid reviews are supported by the generation of appropriate product safety claims and evidence
Hold relevant knowledge of applicable legislation and standards (e.g. HASAW, JSP430, JSP520, Def Stan 00-056, Def Stan 00-051, COSHH)
Knowledge of the whole product safety lifecycle
Hazard Management expertise
Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA) and SWIFT (Structured What IF Techniques)
Goal Structuring Notation (GSN)
Hazard Bow Ties
