This is an exciting time to be joining Ofgem as the way in which energy is generated, transported, stored and supplied to consumers is changing. The push to reduce carbon emissions and the deployment of new technologies means the energy system is in transition towards being low carbon, more decentralised and flexible.

Ofgem’s Systems and Networks division takes an end-to-end view of the energy system, including markets, networks and institutions involved in providing electricity and gas to consumers. This captures important synergies, including bringing together factors affecting investment drivers for the energy sector (market arrangements, access, charging). The division is responsible for managing over £80bn of investment in gas and electricity networks over the next 10 years.

An Engineering Hub has been established in the division, recognising that many of the companies we regulate have engineering and technology at their core. To be an effective regulator and ensure consumers are getting the best deal from the energy networks that supply them, it is essential to have strong technical capabilities. The division is therefore seeking an electrical engineer to fulfil a key role in our regulation of onshore networks within the Engineering Hub.

As a Senior Engineer you will provide engineering and policy support across Ofgem. This will involve direct engagement with the implementation and planning of electricity price controls, including RIIO2, electricity network codes and system operation. The primary objective is to ensure that Ofgem has the technical capability to effectively regulate the electricity system.

It is a challenging role that will see you assisting in the development of key areas of transmission and distribution policy. You will make recommendations to senior management and representing Ofgem at external meetings, conferences and events. Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will be backed-up by solid professional experience: a Chartered Engineer (or someone whose registration is well underway), you will bring expertise in either electrical transmission/distribution or a related engineering discipline such as metering, equipment manufacture or utility communications/control systems. You will also boast a highly developed capability in both quantitative and qualitative analysis, familiarity with key concepts of economic regulation. The ability to deliver to challenging timescales is essential.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:

  • Up to 30 days’ annual leave  Excellent training and development opportunities  The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits  Flexible working hours and family friendly policies  Subsidised gym and restaurant (London location only) Interest free season ticket loan.

To apply, please go to our website via the Apply button.

Closing date: midnight, 23 July 2018.

Ofgem is an equal opportunities employer. Protecting consumers and powering the future of the energy debate.
