Do you want to become the core of new developments in the Materials Research Facility (MRF) at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) in Culham?

Are you an experienced mechanical engineer with background in remote control systems (nuclear, oil & gas, medical)? 

The Materials Research Facility is built to test irradiated materials for both the Fusion and Fission materials development programmes and will be used internally by Culham Centre for Fusion Energy as well as industry and academia. Within the Materials Research Facility (MRF) radioactive samples from m to mm scale are being prepared and evaluated using micro-mechanical, thermophysical and microscopical techniques. 

The UK Atomic Energy Authority has an excellent opportunity for an experienced (mechanical/nuclear) engineer to join the team within the MRF. 

As the MRF engineering team will grow, the MRF lead engineer role will grow with it in the future. The Department is building up its scientific capabilities and it is expected to grow into a full operational laboratory with 5 hot-cells for sample preparation and 12 - 20 research rooms for scientific evaluations within the next 5 years. 

You would be part of the MRF operational team but work closely together with UKAEA Central engineering department and the UKAEA Design office. Due to our current phase and the expected growth the engineer needs to be able to work in parallel at new designs, commissioning systems and adaptations of `non-active to active` installations. 

Key accountabilities include:

- Oversight of the technical delivery of engineering solutions, adhering to relevant legislation, codes and site processes / practices. 

- Development and implementation of a technical execution plan for each project.

- Focus on strategic engineering design for the benefit of the project, ensuring agreed milestones are met.

- Selection and implementation of System Engineering tools and processes to ensure design is conducted within a SE framework appropriate to the task

- Design solutions to integrate scientific instruments into shielded research rooms

- Design of transport systems to integrate MRF with external national and international partners, adaptations and integrations of equipment for sample preparation, sample handling systems and tooling to enhance the remote handling.

- Leading a small dedicated MRF engineering team and the UKAEA engineers and designers temporarily working on MRF projects.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. Knowledge skills and experience

Essential

- Qualified to Degree level (or equivalent) in an engineering or scientific discipline with a proven track record of delivering versatile technical projects. 

- Ability of being creative in combining system engineering implementation, a strong foundation in engineering design and development; able to lead design activities across several engineering disciplines.

- Able to combine standard techniques from different origins with innovative techniques (Victorian engineering with high tech systems) 

- Good oral and written communication skills, strong sense of team focus, able to deal with uncertainty, able to inspire a can-do approach amongst team members. Good facilitation skills

- Able to estimate resource requirements and focus on delivery to an agreed timeline. Flexibility in responding to unforeseen changes with a view to minimising impact on technical delivery. Able to assert authority on team through experience and example. Clear understanding of and adherence to scope

Desirable

- Experience in a hot-cell facility or with nuclear engineering

- Experience with manipulator tooling, pick-and-place robotics, shielding design and equipment separation to separate or shield sensitive parts

Selection Method:

-Initial interviews will be held on 27 July and 3 August 2018. You may be required to attend a final interview on 10 August 2018. 

-As part of the selection process you will be expected to present an overview of previous work and a work-based simulation exercise.
