We are currently recruiting for an Engineering Manager (Civils) to be based in Portsmouth Naval base in Hampshire.
You will have the chance to work as part of a large team with the opportunity to work on some of the most diverse range of architecture including buildings dating back to 1495, and work on a variety of materials which include concrete, masonry, steel, and timber to name a few.
Portsmouth Naval Base is home to some of the oldest dry docks in the world, including the first dry dock ever built. The base is the oldest in the Royal Navy and it has been an important part of the Senior Service's history and the defence of the British Isles for centuries. At one time it was the largest industrial site in the world.
The dockyard consists of 3 basins, 17 dry docks and locks, sufficient alongside berths for half of the present surface navy fleet, and over 600 buildings developed over the last 300 years. It comprises an area of about 336 acres and includes buildings that range from shipbuilding warehouses, churches, museums, block mills and also the Naval Academy where Lord Admiral Nelson himself learnt his trade. Although the site is predominantly industrial, there are also a variety of office and residential buildings that in total employ over 17,000 people across the site.
Your main responsibilities as an Engineering Manager - Civils will involve:
Manage a team of Subject matter experts within a range of civil engineering areas
Manage the Material State / Safe to Operate condition for all areas of Civil Engineering, both Marine / Shore-side
Deliver pragmatic support / solutions to Programmes / Projects - managing resource support as required
Ensure compliance with the SHE Management System, mitigating risks and improving overall SHE performance
Provide suitable information / instruction / communication for the team to undertake all activities in a safe and environmentally friendly manner
Demonstrate strong and active leadership for SHE, setting high standards across all areas
Civil Engineering Design Authority for infrastructure and equipment - provision of advice under MSDF and governance accountability, technical approval of BAE Systems SSS business cases
Civil Engineering professional lead for Design Review of new infrastructure and equipment, provision of Technical advice to Project teams and technical audit
Your skills and qualifications as an Engineering Manager - Civils:
Degree in Civil Engineering discipline and CEng Status or working towards.
Knowledge of wider civil engineering disciplines - Hydraulics, Geotechnics, Structures & Materials
Have a comprehensive knowledge of Maritime Civil Engineering
Member of appropriate institution (ICE or IStructE)
Demonstrate project management capability
Have report writing and resource estimation skills.
Demonstrate a good understanding of engineering principles and applications

An ability to provide clear, confident communication and presentation.
A working knowledge of the civil engineering business / functions and operations including their priorities and the associated engineering implications.
A strong team player with ability to direct, persuade and influence robust line managers to promote best practice in engineering.
Ability to work without supervision; effective time management and strong organisational skills.
