Technical Lead - Smart Buildings

The BRE Centre for Smart Homes and Buildings (http://www.cshb.com/) is a collaborative hub for industry, academia and government. It works to accelerate the use of smart products and services in the built environment, maximise the benefits for all and address common challenges in the Internet of Things (IoT) market.

BRE is also undertaking a major four year R&D programme in the construction sector, together with a consortium of partners and stakeholders, focusing on offsite construction and digital technologies and processes. A key element will be the operation of smart buildings and the use of data to monitor and drive performance. These two initiatives will be closely linked.

This is an exciting role for someone with a background in Facilities Management/Building Services Consultancy and/or a research organisation background with experience or a keen interest in smart technologies/IoT who wants to be at the forefront of research of the performance of smart buildings and emerging technologies.

The main purpose of this role is to lead the research, performance assessment, testing and advisory services in smart buildings and emerging technologies. You will perform research across a wide range of topics including in-use asset management, BIM, smart facilities management, energy, health and wellbeing, safety and security, connectivity, interoperability, privacy and reliability. You will also collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across all aspects of building design and operation.

Role Profile

The role of the Technical Lead (Smart Buildings) will be to:

  • Perform research on a range of topics around smart buildings, including both theoretical research and hands on practical work such as system design, integration and testing
  • Lead the creation and development of physical smart building demonstrator projects on the BRE estate and in collaboration with external partner demonstrators
  • Project manage joint BRE, industry and university research projects
  • Write reports and articles based on the research
  • Disseminate findings internally, amongst wider stakeholders and at external events
  • Lead interactive workshops and expert groups
  • Scope new research projects and development of proposals and propositions

Skills and Experience

The candidate should have:

  • A relevant degree in Building Services/Engineering or similar
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards with Membership of IET or CIBSE
  • Experience working in a consultant, researcher, innovation or similar role
  • Good level of technical skill in Building Management Systems (BMS) controls and the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Capable of independent, self-driven and methodical research
  • Ability to understand complex, multi-disciplinary systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a commitment to team work
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, proactive and self-motivated; ability to balance priorities and workload
  • Experience or a keen interest in smart building technologies
  • Experience of developing technical and commercial proposals
  • Extensive professional work experience

Location of Role

You would be based at BRE in Watford with some travel to meetings across the UK.
