Job Details

The Health and Safety Executive is an independent regulator. Our work touches virtually every sector of Great Britain’s industries and the constantly evolving nature of work and technology. We don’t just inspect workplaces and implement the law, but we also campaign for better H&S practice; craft and review guidance and regulations; provide specialist products and services both here and overseas; and produce crucial research and statistics.

Our Electrical Engineers help some of Britain’s most hazardous – and essential – industries work safely and well. And in this role, you can use your considerable technical knowledge to influence both individual employers and whole sectors, from electrical power distribution and transmission, through to utilities, agriculture and construction.

You might be investigating the cause of a fatal accident, helping a business understand the correct controls to put in place, or contributing to the development of industry guidelines. It’s therefore essential you have the knowledge and experience to analyse electrical/control systems forensically, inspect workplaces effectively and appear as a specialist witness at tribunals, inquests and legal proceedings.

Of course, we’ll provide you with specialist training to understand the legal and enforcement requirements of this frontline role. We will, however, be looking for substantial practical experience in electrical/control system engineering and a breadth of knowledge in other key areas including:

  • Distribution and use of electricity at both high and low voltage, including safe systems of work;
  • Dlectrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety-related control systems (such as PLCs) relating to process control equipment and machinery;
  • Safety-related control systems including hazards and failure mechanisms, risk assessment techniques, design, implementation and testing, maintenance and modification; and
  • Application and use of electrical equipment in hazardous atmospheres.

You will have an honours degree in electrical engineering or control system engineering, be a member of a relevant institution (such as the IET) and be chartered with the Engineering Council. It’s essential that you also have a full driving licence.
