Graduates have the opportunity to work across a wide range of opportunities including software cyber research, electronics development, mathematical modelling, data science and software engineering (from low level coding in VHDL through C/C++ to Java and Big Data technologies). Graduates are supported to develop technical skills in a range of cutting-edge technologies while they develop in their careers as engineering and technology professionals.

Company Overview

BAE Systems Applied Intelligence is the Cyber Security division of BAE Systems, one of the world’s leading Defence and Security companies. We help nations, governments and businesses around the world defend themselves against cybercrime. Everything we do creates a safer future. In the new age of cyber and digital threats, our people have a shared vision to protect the connected world. We are obsessed about solving problems for our customers; we bring together great minds that make a difference on a daily basis.

Role Profile

As a Graduate Engineer, you will be part of a project team who will coach you on the day to day skills required to work closely with our customers, both internal and external. It offers an exciting opportunity to develop technical skills in a range of cutting edge technologies whilst learning the tools, techniques and processes used by our Engineering professionals.

You will be part of our Future Talent community and be provided with a career mentor who will guide you throughout your career with us. It is not all work and no play; the Future Talent community run social events and activities to get involved with and enjoy!

As a Graduate Engineer, you could work across a variety of areas including: Software Engineering, Operational Cyber, Physical Science & Technology, Testing, Application Support and Infrastructure. Here’s an overview of the different roles but you can also check out our website to read about what our engineers are working on.

Physical Science and Technology - Graduates in this practice work on a wide range of challenging problems, developing innovative mission critical technology and products for our customers. Applications include high performance network equipment, space systems, software radios and underwater systems. Graduates are given the opportunity to develop a breadth of skills. You might be designing RF/digital electronics or developing software/firmware targeted at a wide range of devices (eg FPGAs, ARM processors, GPUs, microcontrollers). You could be involved in designing signal processing algorithms or researching new and exciting areas of science and technology. Graduates in this practice typically have a degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, Maths or Computer Science; if you enjoy making things and understanding how they work this could be the place for you.

Software Engineering – Software Engineering makes up around a quarter of our workforce. Our engineers range from apprentices and graduates through to technology specialists with multiple years of experience, and our work is just as diverse, ranging from small bespoke customer projects to international market leading products deployed to hundreds of clients. We work with a multitude of technologies; old and new, large and small, which gives our engineers the scope and opportunity for learning and developing their careers. As a leader in our market we are able to implement our own way of developing different types of software, adopt common standards for our implementation of Agile and look across the industry to find new ways of doing things.

Operational Cyber - We are looking for talented developers and researchers who can solve our customers’ hardest problems. Trust us, these are not the kind of problems you'll get at a hedge fund, a Shoreditch start-up or even a Silicon Valley tech company. Our customers and the things they want to do are pretty unique. We work across a range of platforms including desktop, mobile and embedded systems and a range of languages including Python, C#, Java and C++. If you have been busy building your own software, making your Raspberry Pi do something cool, or figuring out how someone else’s software works, this is a great area for you. Most candidates should be eligible to achieve DV Clearance and may be required to begin the application process upon starting the role. Please refer to the DBS NSV website for guidance. If you are unsure whether you are eligible, we would still like to talk to you.

Software Test– You’ll be planning, designing and executing test procedures through automated tests, performance and web service with manual interventions in order to assess the completeness and quality of engineered solutions and/or products. Creating processes and test policies that ensure the flawless quality of our products for our customers is essential; it takes great talent to find the problem in the code and get it fixed before we release a product to a customer.

Application Support - This is the part of our engineering community that cares about live systems first and foremost. The people in this practice are passionate about fixing problems, maintaining live services, and are development-literate; usually employed to enhance as well as sustain critical capabilities across our Government and Commercial clients. If you are passionate about working with cutting edge technology or even sometimes working with legacy technology and supporting “other people’s code”, or if you are motivated to drive the quality, reliability and performance of essential systems, then this could be the practice for you.

Infrastructure - The design, delivery, operation and control of IT infrastructures required to deliver and support IT services and products to meet the needs of a business. This includes the building and management of systems and components in virtualised computing environments and the monitoring of performance of systems and services. If transforming your vision of a systems design and bringing it to life is something you enjoy, this area will take that passion and allow you to create the right frameworks for our products while seeing them come to life.

What you will receive

  • £30,000 starting salary
  • £1,000 relocation allowance
  • Private medical insurance
  • 25 days annual leave
  • Flexible benefits with discounts on restaurants, cinemas and many more!
  • Share incentive plan

Entry Requirements

  • On track to achieve/already achieved 2:2 degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths discipline
  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Successful candidates for this role will be required to go through UK Government security clearance prior to starting with us
  • For those eligible and interested in helping us defend nations we offer the opportunity to enhance your clearance to a national security level and be deployed to one of our customers, this also brings with it an additional fixed annual bonus
  • Interest in Technology and awareness of latest industry developments
  • Highly motivated and ability to learn quickly
