Job Details

What’s the opportunity?

The growing order book within MBDA has created a growing workload for our new production facility at Bolton. To achieve the ramp-up of production across these products requires strong support from the design teams to address issues as they occur.

The Design Support to Production Team is located at the production facility and provides the first line of support when problems occur. Their input is critical to establishing the production rate as quickly as possible and maintaining this rate.

What will you be doing?

This role encompasses all aspects of supporting the transition of a product design into production.  You will spend time liaising with the design and test systems teams at Stevenage, understanding the design and associated test regime and equipment and with the manufacturing teams at Bolton to understand the specific product manufacturing processes. With this knowledge you will then provide a first line of advice to the manufacturing teams when problems occur, determining whether the problem is a Design, Test System and or Manufacturing related fault and proposing and implementing appropriate solutions.

Over time, you will seek to influence the design population at Stevenage to produce designs that are more robust from a Design for Manufacture/Design for Test perspective and more mature as they enter the production environment, ensuring that the production facility is able to get to full rate as quickly as possible.

What are the benefits for you?

This role provides a unique opportunity to bring together the design and production areas to ease the transition of a product into production. The scope to learn and enhance your capabilities and understanding of both environments is a rare opportunity.  You will have plenty of opportunity to interface and influence at all levels of the organisation and to enhance the interface between design and manufacturing especially in ensuring that our designs contain the features necessary to improve manufacturability and testability.

What’s great about joining this team?

The design support team is a multi-skilled team of interdependent, highly capable and committed individuals. They are the crucial link between design and manufacturing and must use all of their experience, technical and personal capabilities to interface to both areas of the business, where time and cost pressures often cause rifts in the interface that must be carefully handled for success. The team is friendly and supportive and is respected throughout the manufacturing and design organisations.

Who and what we are looking for from you?

High performing teams need high performing and competent individuals. To be suitable for this role, Individuals will be able to demonstrate a number of the following attributes:
  • Likely to be degree qualified in Electronics or a closely related subject.
  • Significant proven experience in the design of electronics covering a spectrum of technologies (e.g. digital, RF, analogue), preferably (but not essential) in the defence industry.
  • Experience in supporting manufacturing and resolving manufacturing issues.
  • Supporting the transition of product into production, interfacing and influencing the design teams as necessary to improve Design for Manufacture/Test etc. will involve travel to other UK and international MBDA and supplier sites.
  • Possess good problem solving skills.
  • Have excellent verbal communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • The capability to write clear and concise engineering documentation.
  • The pro-activeness, motivation, ability and tenacity to resolve issues and generate solutions to problems whilst under time pressure.
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills and competencies.
  • Work well in a multifunctional and multi-skilled team environment, supporting knowledge transfer to/from colleagues.

Note that this role requires reasonable travel in the UK and some travel overseas in Europe.

What you would get

Competitive salaries, flexible working, paid overtime (subject to level), a comprehensive pension scheme, an employee funded voluntary private healthcare scheme, sporting activities, fantastic site facilities, bonus schemes (subject to level) and superb learning and development opportunities.

Please note that in order to apply for MBDA UK opportunities you will need to be eligible for SC (Secret Level) UK Security Clearance.
