What’s the opportunity?
MBDA has entered the next phase of its exciting evolution as a world class and dominant European missile company. The growing workload within MBDA has created exciting opportunities within the Electronics Design Function for an PCB Technologies Engineer to develop a long term career covering all aspect of PCB and component technology from raw card fabrication through to assembly and reliability. Ultimately the PCB Technologies Engineer is responsible for providing a design that is manufacturable to cost and time, meets the technical design requirements and will be reliable in the end environment.
The Electronics Design Function is tasked with supplying a full range of design activities for our complete range of missile systems covering land, air and naval systems.
 
What will you be doing?
The role encompasses knowledge and skills in each of the relevant skill areas and provides a service to the design engineers as design activities progress. It is a key role providing advice on design for manufacture and design for reliability issues working with multiple stakeholders around the business.
The PCB Technologies Engineer will be working cross project teams and will have some international working, liaising and influencing non-UK teams working on similar technologies and design projects to ensure best practice and technology needs are identified and manged to provide repeatable processes for manufacture.
The skill areas are:
  • PCB Technologies Assembly Technology – the understanding of PCB Materials, their characteristics and how we define them for use in our products and critically how they are assembled. The role encompasses assessing PCB manufacturing and assembly processes via laboratory work and by working with the Manufacturing centre at Bolton and Stevenage. Also techniques used to ensure PCB’s are able to survive in the military environment will be studied and applied.
Businesses must continuously improve and MBDA is no exception.  Identification and implementation of improvement activities will be part of these roles.  The activities of the role will span the international boundary and encompass our French and Italian colleagues.

Who and what we are looking for from you?
High performing teams need high performing and competent individuals. To be suitable for this role, Individuals will be able to demonstrate a number of the following attributes:
  • Have experience in PCB assembly technology through either a PCB fabrication house or a PCB assembly house or other closely related experience.
  • Ideally have a minimum qualification in Electronics or a closely related subject. This could be ONC, HNC etc.
  • Have experience in PCB assembly technology through either a PCB fabrication house or a PCB assembly house or other closely related experience.
  • Have experience in solders and soldering techniques and micro joining techniques. Providing process knowledge and advice for surface mount assembly and other soldering processes
  • Have experience in working closely with a design environment advising on PCB design for manufacture and PCB layout technologies.
  • Propose board technology and structure for a PCB layout designer to use after consultation with PCB fabricators, particularly for circuit designs requiring controlled impedance.
  • Assess mechanical design concepts for practicality of electrical routing & conformance to PCB design rules (electronic packaging assessment)
  • Resolve conflicts within rules set and conflicts between rules and the circuit design requirements that the PCB layout designer, PCB fabricator or board assembler may encounter.
  • Based on adjudged level of risk, conduct mechanical vibration/shock & thermal assessments of boards. Using modelling tool
  • Provide specialist advice and support across projects and to other functions as appropriate
  • Working effectively in collaboration with mechanical & electronic designers, PCB layout group, PCB fabricators & manufacturing (board assembly)Being able to clearly communicate to mechanical & electronic designers any PCB limitations associated with their initial proposals and influencing the adoption of alternative solutions
  • Working to tight or critical timescales, identifying and addressing critical aspects as a priority
  • Production / process engineering background
  • Have excellent verbal communication and written communication skills
  • Pro-activeness, motivation, ability and tenacity to deliver a task on time and to cost.
  • Possess good problem solving skills.
