Nuclear Safety Inspector – Electrical Engineering

£67,931 - £80,787 + generous benefits

Bootle, Cheltenham, London

In a rapidly changing industry, you’ll uphold the highest standards

The challenge

A fast-evolving public corporation, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is committed to shaping the future of regulation in the UK nuclear industry. Our dedicated team makes sure that nuclear sites across the country meet the highest safety standards. It’s an exciting challenge that’s critical to the protection of wider society. Could you help a rapidly changing industry control hazards and improve security?

The role

Our Nuclear Safety Inspectors perform a crucial role. They check compliance, raise safety standards and reassure the public. The role is varied and offers a range of responsibilities, from enforcing the law to investigating incidents. Some inspectors focus on on-site inspections, while others will assess safety submissions or manage intervention projects. In all cases, clear communication is vital. Join us, and you’ll work with a wide range of contacts, providing advice and taking formal action if necessary.

As a specialist in Electrical Engineering, you’ll assess and inspect the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and operation of the electrical engineering systems that provide energy for safety systems, structures and components. These systems have high availability targets (e.g. 99.99% or better). You’ll therefore need good knowledge of:

  • the application of redundancy and diversity techniques
  • advanced protection coordination
  • transient and stability studies
  • loading and sequencing of diesel generators
  • earthing systems
  • performance under normal and fault conditions of major components such as switchgear, transformers and electrical protection systems.

The person

Degree-qualified in a relevant subject (or with an equivalent qualification), you’ll have worked in a high hazard industry. If you don’t have this experience but do have specialist electrical engineering knowledge, we can provide structured training to adapt your skills for our industry. A chartered member of a relevant professional body (or with equivalent experience), you’ll be prepared to travel and have a full UK driving licence.

Whatever your background, it’s important you have the credibility to inspire trust and confidence. Collaborative and articulate, you’ll be adept at persuading and influencing others to bring about positive change. The key is to provide practical guidance and to apply sound judgement to make risk-informed decisions. Comfortable working in a complex and fast-paced environment, you’ll be both resilient and flexible in the face of tough challenges.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries, with Inspectors earning £67,931 - £80,787. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a generous Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a very generous holiday entitlement.

About us
