VNS (UK) Ltd is a recognised world leader in the area of remote handling for hostile environments and in support of continued strong growth seeks to enhance its core team by recruiting a Control Systems and Software Engineer.


An appointee taking on this role will join a small team responsible for delivering all control and software elements on a wide range of bespoke robotic solutions for hostile environments. The appointee will be responsible for small packages of work under the supervision of the lead control and software engineer for each project. Based on performance the appointee can rapidly progress to have responsibility for larger packages and entire teams on a combination of long-term and exciting projects.

Being part of a small and dynamic team, the appointee will be involved in all parts of the life cycle of remote handling control and software development from requirements specification through concept, design, implementation and development to manufacture, integration, commissioning, delivery and operation.

The fulfilment of the role will involve interacting with the clients at various levels and the appointee will also have the opportunity to participate in some marketing and business development activities with further exposure to company clients.


Applicants must have a 2:1 or 1st Class Honours degree in Control Systems and/or Software Engineering or related fields. Creative problem solving abilities are also essential.

Additionally, applicants must have reasonable knowledge (preferably also experience) in many, of the following areas and be prepared to gain knowledge of the others:

  • Control theory
  • OO Software development (all stages) (preferably C++)
  • Actuator technologies
  • Sensor technologies
  • PLC and SCADA development (all stages)
  • FMEA
  • Robotics (Forward/inverse kinematics, trajectory generation, control theory)
  • UML/SysML
  • Databases
  • Motor drive technologies
  • Requirements analysis
  • Real-time software development and OS usage
  • Client interaction
  • Technical report writing

Beneficial but non-essential knowledge and experience:

  • Communications (theory and practice at software and hardware levels)
  • Electrical
  • Hydraulics and pneumatics


Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

You will be eligible to join the company Stakeholder pension scheme to which the company contributes a sum equivalent to 5% of the annual basic salary.  Other benefits include 26 days annual leave rising by 1 day per completed year of service up to a maximum of 31 plus 8 statutory Bank Holidays.  Three days of the leave are used to allow for a Christmas shutdown.  Bonus scheme, private annual health checks and professional fees are also part of the package.

Start Date

This position is currently based in our Abingdon office, but will be in our new premises at Harwell from mid-December 2018 and is available immediately.
