Engineering Manager - Weights

We currently have a vacancy for an Engineering Manager to lead our Weights Engineering team at our site in Scotstoun.

This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced engineers to join our growing Naval Ships engineering business in Glasgow. BAE Systems are currently working on one of the biggest projects in the UK defence market right now. You will have the opportunity to make your mark on a range of programmes which include the next generation of frigate for the Royal Navy. We were also recently selected by the Australian Government as the preferred tenderer for the design of the Hunter Class Frigate programme demonstrating our export capability.

As an Engineering Manager - Weights, you will be managing and leading a team of weight engineers, who are the Subject Matter Experts for lightship weight and CoG (centre of gravity) estimation. Your role will be critical in the integration of wholeship weights and thus ensuring the design achieves key performance requirements. You will need to have some experience of managing a complex engineering product and knowledge of the engineering lifecycle is key to this position.

Your main responsibilities as an Engineering Manager - Weights will involve:

Managing and leading a team who calculate a predicted lightship and a breakdown of budgets and margins.

Identifying threats to weight budgets or opportunities for weight reduction and working with the budget owners to recover weight or achieve weight savings.

Preparing for and supporting design reviews and other regular technical reviews and ensuring the necessary evidence and documentation is in place including developing and maintaining clear and simple metrics.

Liaising with suppliers to challenge them to meet their weight budgets and attending test weighing of procured equipment, structural units and manufactured items at supplier's premises or within the shipyard and review Test Weighing Certificates provided by suppliers.

Managing resourcing within the team, including progression and development of engineers, organising training as required and addressing performance issues.

Your skills and qualifications:

Ability to liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across the project is essential, gathering information to understand the current and predicted weight outturn for the ship and demonstrate that design intent and the weight and CoG budget are being maintained

Some experience of leading and developing a team of engineers is essential Track record on managing or integrating complex engineering projects is essential

Managing weights or awareness of the impact of weight on the design solution is desirable within a maritime, aerospace or automotive industry. A background in an engineering discipline, especially structures, mechanical or electrical engineering, or hydromechanics, may also be suitable. - ;

Previous experience of creating publication and presenting engineering reports is required

Experience with using engineering databases and an understanding of 3D modelling is also key
