The Opportunity
An opportunity has arisen in the newly established Complex Warhead Centre of Excellence (CW CofEx) for a Senior / Principal Engineer to work on the delivery of warhead research, design development and qualification programmes. The role involves working with a multi-disciplined team in UK and France, customers, partners and suppliers across Europe, and establishing new ways of working for this Anglo-French CofEx.
The Role
  • The role will involve working with the Capability teams (e.g. Design and Manufacturing or Trials to deliver a range of work packages on time, on cost and on quality
  • Work with the company’s engineering practices & tools including PDM / Matrix, CREO (CAD), DOORS, Matlab, FMEA & FTA, MS Office, SAP
  • Work alongside domain specific engineering practices & tools including hydro-codes, semi-empirical fast-running models, and explosives and munitions specific test methods and design practices
  • Apply engineering expertise & knowledge as necessary to assure product quality and safety, and achieve innovative and world beating products. Particular emphasis on expertise in latest mechanical engineering tools and techniques and aerospace grade product design, test, modelling and simulation.
  • Manage and deliver design, test, modelling and simulation activities throughout the product lifecycle including design definition and configuration management, requirements management and design compliance / justification, design / phase reviews, test and production readiness reviews,
  • Define, manage and deliver delegated work packages and subcontracts to time, cost and quality, including progress reporting, scheduling, cost control, risk management, import / export control and logistics.
  • Establish and manage relationships with customers and suppliers inside and outside MBDA.

  • You will need and/or have opportunity to acquire skills in the use of commonly used tools such as PDM / MATRIX (product data and configuration), CREO (Computer Aided Design), HYDROCODE (impact and explosive simulation), DOORS (Requirements Management) and a number of specialised semi-empirical engineering tools.
  • You will be involved in all stages of the warhead equipment lifecycle from technology & concept studies, through design development and qualification, to prototype manufacture and production.
  • The role will involve international working with colleagues in UK and France, customers, suppliers and partners across Europe, including Italy and Germany.

  • The Complex Warheads CofEx is an exciting new department organised within the Engineering Directorate. Its role is to define requirement, design and qualify Complex Warheads for UK and French programmes.
  • The Complex Warheads CofEx has over 40 professional scientists and engineers in France and UK (Stevenage & Bolton) undertaking design, simulation & modelling, trials requirements and supplier management.
  • The team applies high levels of expertise to develop and apply new and innovative technologies and engineering tools.
  • The role is based at Bolton. You will be focused on the design of Warheads and related energetic materials and devices, working throughout the product lifecycle from concept and innovation through to qualification, manufacture and in-service support.
What are we looking for?
  • You will experience in a technical engineering role with safety critical systems (e.g. defence, aerospace etc), and will already have, or will develop expertise in the domain of munitions, explosives and explosive devices. You will have an understanding of product lifecycle for defence aerospace equipment.
  • You will ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent in engineering or applied science, and it is desirable that you will have, or be working towards professional accreditation.
  • You will have good analytical and problem solving skills and demonstrate an ability to focus on technical details
  • You will be able to work independently and as part of a national and/or international team that includes colleagues from other departments and disciplines as well as customers, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • You will be effective in an international working environment, undertaking European business travel when necessary and exhibiting cultural sensitivity and appropriate professional behaviours.
  • You will be proactive and have the ability to challenge constructively and appropriately, identifying problems and providing solutions. You will be well organised and be able to manage and deliver activities confidently andefficiently.
  • You will have good communication skills, be able to communicate effectively by verbal, written and presentational means with people of different organisations, cultures, professions, and levels of seniority.
  • You will have good influencing skills, work well in a team, be self-motivated, trustworthy, passionate, and behave with integrity.
