Ocado are an online supermarket who service their customers using a network of highly automated, cutting edge, Customer Fulfilment Centres - probably the most advanced of their type in the world.. Ocado also develop and implement fulfilment solutions for clients both in the UK and internationally for which we use a mix of proprietary and externally sourced mechanical handling solutions. This scope of this role is to validate and approve the concept design then manage the sourcing, tendering, commercials and detailed design of any externally sourced mechanical handling equipment required to service a CFC project.

You will be a part of the Design team, who in turn are part of Ocado Logistics Projects group. The Design team are responsible for designing Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFC) for Ocado and their clients. This includes:

  • Identifying and agreeing business requirements and metrics
  • Modelling site sizes, building, assets and mechanical handling equipment requirements
  • Developing and evaluating concept level designs of mechanical handling equipment and operational process / layout designs and agreeing with stakeholders / clients
  • Ensuring designs fulfil business requirements and are productive, safe and value for money

Role and Responsibilities

  • Review and agree concept designs for externally sourced mechanical handling equipment
  • Prepare and Issue tender documentation
  • Manage the supplier tender process
  • Manage the commercial and vendor selection process to contract / order
  • Manage the MHE project during the vendor’s detailed design phase including agreement of the Functional Design Specification
  • Handover the project prior to others for installation & commissioning
  • Identification, assessment and agreement of any new vendors
  • Act as a centre of excellence for externally sourced MHE within the Design team, supporting and mentoring other designers in best practises and technical content
  • Identify and progress opportunities to develop the solutions and challenge vendors and internal stakeholders in order to reduce capital and whole life costs, improve ergonomics, safety, integration, maintainability etc

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A degree calibre individual – ideally with an engineering degree which includes mechanical and electrical elements
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels both internally and externally and influence others to discuss and form agreement
  • Project Management experience on automation, mechanical handling or production facility projects
  • Confidence, adaptability and flexibility to deal with changing priorities, requirements and workloads in a fast paced environment
  • Experience in holding commercial responsibilities (contracts, negotiating pricing, terms etc)
  • Experience in forming business cases, paybacks etc
  • Good general numerical and analytical skills
  • Previous MHE experience in a supplier environment would be desirable
  • Good working knowledge of PLC architect (ideally Siemens) would be desirable
