Designing the most complex vehicle on the planet is no mean feat, and the professional development offered by engineering a nuclear submarine is a once in a generation opportunity.

Would you like to play a key role in the design and development of submarines? We currently have vacancies for Engineers at our site near England's distinguished Lake District.

You will be working as part of key Engineering teams such as Materials, Dynamics, Safety, Product Security, Mechanical Engineering, Human Factors, Structures, Systems Engineering, Propulsion, Naval Architecture, Boat Control & Instrumentation and Communication Systems, each of which are responsible for the design and development of vital submarine structures, systems and equipment.

These varied roles will provide you with the opportunity to engage in a range of design activities, throughout the lifecycle of a submarine from setting requirements and conducting performance analysis, through writing technical specifications for subcontracted equipment to generating test procedures and reviewing evidence to prove the submarine is fit for purpose. You will also have exposure to major customers, as well as future opportunities to progress into engineering management or technical specialist roles.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer will involve:

Undertaking a full range of system, structural or spatial design analysis and calculations

Producing evidence in support of qualification, legislative requirements and safety justifications and to provide specialist support for associated activities

Contributing to identification and rapid closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages and to manage the resulting design change activities

Undertaking peer reviews or checking / verification tasks

Liaising with internal and external customers to ensure their requirements are adequately satisfied and to provide technical advice

Identifying and implementing opportunities for personal and team development

Progress reporting, including the identification of relevant issues, risks and opportunities

Authoring system design documentation including, but not limited to, design descriptions, safety documentation, subcontract equipment technical specifications and test & commissioning specifications

Providing assurance to the Design Authority as to the adequacy and robustness of the Safety Case

Supporting Factory Acceptance Testing of equipment at supplier premises and testing on site

Your skills and qualifications:

Degree in relevant STEM subject or equivalent experience

Industrial experience relevant to the role

CEng or able to achieve full membership of an appropriate institution

Maritime - Submarines

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
