Digital Forensic Technician

Lambeth HQ

36 hours a week

The forensic service at the MET searches for truth and justice for the victims of crime. In the Digital, Cyber and Communications department, we help gather digital evidence, analyse it and present it to the MPS and the Criminal Justice System. With digital crimes increasing, it’s key that we deliver great technical services so that officers can work effectively, and ultimately, help keep the city safe. This is a unique role, where you can develop your own specialism and learn the technical details of digital video and modern computer science. It’s challenging work, but it plays a critical role in fighting crime.

Processing, acquiring and analysing media, you’ll present and prepare video material and evidence to the Criminal Justice system. The research and techniques you’ll provide to the Laboratory will improve the efficiency and quality of our service to the entire force. In fact, you’ll provide technical advice and help troubleshoot technical problems so that officers can submit their forensic information. Once they have, you’ll use your sound judgement to technically analyse audio-visual and report on findings.

With a technical degree or relevant experience, you’ll have an impressive knowledge of fundamental technical video engineering principles. And you won’t just be an expert in video. You’ll have sound understanding of coding principles (particularly to process data streams) and emerging technologies and trends. But you won’t be working in isolation, so you’ll need excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts and findings to a non-technical audience. Your technical skills will help you carry out the role, but it’s honesty, objectivity and impartiality that’ll make you feel like you belong in the forensic department.

This is an excellent opportunity to use your love of technology, problem-solving skills and strong determination to help London.
