BAE Systems Maritime Naval Ships is responsible for hugely complex and innovative undertakings and we require enthusiastic and talented Weights Engineers to join us in our Maritime Naval Ships Team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join our growing Naval Ships engineering business in Glasgow. BAE Systems are currently working on one of the biggest projects in the UK defence market right now. You will have the opportunity to make your mark on a range of programmes which include the next generation of frigate for the Royal Navy. We were also recently selected by the Australian Government as the preferred tenderer for the design of the Hunter Class Frigate programme and a partner in the recently announced Canadian Surface Combatant Programme demonstrating our growing export capability.

As a Weights Engineer you will be the Subject Matter Expert for lightship weight and CoG (centre of gravity) estimation undertaking weight management activities on a range of programs, including identify weight consumption threats and opportunities for weight reduction.

You will liaise with a wide range of stakeholders across the projects to gather information to understand the current and predicted weight outturn and produce regular reports to Senior Management on weight and CoG consumption against budget and margin remaining.

As an Engineer (Weights) your main responsibilities will include:

Processing weight information for Projects using appropriate processes and tools.

Gathering and collating weight information from equipment manufacturers, suppliers and internal departments

Interrogating CAD models for weight information.

Interpreting relevant information on design and manufacturing drawings.

Estimating and Calculating weights and centres information

You will also be involved in:

Preparation and supply of information completed to MOD standard NES 163 or alternative classification in support of customer.

Interrogation of data from Weight Database to produce ship weight predictions

Recognition of errors between recorded data and physical evidence bringing these to the attention of the Team Leader

Implementation of all policies, procedures and processes applicable to Weight Control

Preparation and regular review of a Personal Development Plan, with the Principle Engineer, which will enable growth in the role

Your skills and qualifications will include:

Familiarity with CAD packages such as FORAN and AutoCAD and the ability to interrogate them for weight information.

Experience with ship terms and manufacturing processes and have a basic understanding of Naval Architecture or marine engineering terms.

A Broad understanding of the shipbuilding and outfitting cycle.

Knowledge of platform design and integration, with particular reference to weight and weight management and the influence this has on vessel performance is preferred

ONC or HNC in Engineering desirable
