Engineer: Salary will start at £28,644 pa with opportunities to progress within the role up to the maximum of £33,260 pa

Background

The marine network is deployed at remote locations off the coast of the UK and consists of buoy, light vessel and island mounted weather stations. Marine Systems are responsible for the full weather station and power systems installations on these platforms.

In addition to this fixed site network, a fleet of voluntary observing ships host automated systems which are developed and maintained by the Marine Systems team. The team also provides engineering support to the UK’s contribution to the international Argo programme. Data is used for numerical weather prediction, satellite verification, weather forecasting and for the safety of mariners.

Job Purpose

The marine systems design engineer is required to design mechanical aspects of marine installations and maintain drawings of these installations using CAD programs. This is achieved through working with electrical and electronic engineers as a team both on land and at sea (approximately two weeks per year). Other tasks include managing stocks of buoy and mooring hardware, the contribution to specifications for the procurement of mechanical products and responsibility for elements of the local quality and health & safety systems.

Job Responsibilities

1. Use CAD as part of a small multi-skilled engineering team to:

  • Design parts to enable meteorological systems to be installed on a variety of marine platforms
  • Develop housings to better protect instruments at sea
  • Arrange sub-assembly layouts
  • Create drawings of parts and liaise with the supplier on their fabrication
  • Keep design records up to date and manage version control.

2. Use intricate knowledge of deployed systems to follow drawings and instructions to prepare and maintain systems that are electrically, electronically and mechanically fit for deployment.

3. Work within the production licence, change control and asset tracking processes to ensure operational acceptance of the established fixed site network.

4. Attend marine platforms both on the quayside and at sea to perform maintenance and repair, directing crew or contractors to complete some tasks.

5. Produce and maintain assigned H&S and procedural documents that contribute to the safety of the team and quality of the products.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1.  Qualifications and/or experience equivalent to National Qualification Framework Level 5 (eg. HND) in an engineering subject.
2. Proven ability in the design of high-quality mechanical, electronic and electro-mechanical subassemblies to published standards.
3. Experience of producing engineering drawings for fabrication or for contractors to use to perform installations.
4. Confident 3D CAD software user.
5. Proven ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely, both written and verbally.
6. Demonstrate drive and initiative to deliver project objectives without direct supervision.
7. Ability and willingness to work at sea and at heights of up to 10m (training will be provided).
8. Full UK driving licence or ability and willingness to attain one. Engineers also require Colour Perception CP2 or better to drive vehicles in ports.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Experience of installation and maintenance of instrumentation systems in extreme environments
2. Knowledge or health and safety legislation
3. Membership of a Professional Engineering body or working towards gaining professional recognition
