You’ll come alive when danger threatens

Enforcement, engagement, science, intelligence and tech. It takes a lot of expertise to keep consumers and the environment free from danger across the UK. At the Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS), that’s our mission and you could be a major part of it. Your technical advice will be increasingly important as the UK leaves the EU and increases international engagement on trade. The future of regulation and compliance is here.

Implement new product standards

You’ll focus on assessing the mechanical and electrical (M&E) risks in consumer products and ensuring standards are enforced both in-house and through local trading standards offices. This includes designing formal structures for drawing in scientific advice from academia and industry, and interpreting legislation relating to product safety. You will also work with colleagues in the delivery of UK product safety policy, particularly in the context of the UK’s exit from the EU.

An advisor and a communicator

This fast-moving role demands the ability to prioritise multiple tasks, while applying critical thinking and attention to detail. You’ll be excellent at communicating technical subjects to non-specialists. A recognised qualification in mechanical or electrical engineering would be a plus, as would experience of developing or interpreting technical standards.

Benefits that meet high standards

As a Civil Service employee, you’ll be entitled to a large range of benefits, including:

  • 25 days of annual leave on entry, increasing to 30 days after 5 years
  • One additional paid privilege day to mark the Queen’s Birthday
  • Flexible working patterns including part-time or term-time working
  • Generous, paid maternity and paternity leave
  • Interest-free season ticket and bicycle loans
  • Competitive contributory pension scheme
