Software Installation Engineer

We're looking for a Software Installation Engineer to help us shape the future of naval combat systems - the systems that keep the Royal Navy's ships and crews safe at sea.

Our naval combat systems are used across the Royal Navy's surface fleet, from Offshore Patrol Vessels carrying out anti-piracy and security operations, to Type 45 destroyers, patrolling the world's oceans and leading NATO task forces

As a Software Installation Engineer you will assist the Installation team to develop and maintain scripts and applications which enable the automated installation of software baselines relating to a number of complex Naval Combat System equipment (CSEs) including the CMS & Shared Infrastructure Products. The software systems are a complex combination of multi-million lines of source code developed in-house, integrated with a host of 3rd party COTS software packages to be deployed into a networked, multi-node system architecture. Ensuring such complex systems can be reliably & repeatedly deployed with the minimum of operator intervention is the core responsibility of the Software Installation team.

This role will provide you with exposure to multiple RN platforms including Queen Elizabeth Carrier, Type 26 Frigate, Type 45 Destroyer and the new River Class OPVs. All software developed will be highly configurable, in order to maximise commonality across CSEs.

Your main responsibilities as a Software Installation Engineer will involve:

Designing, developing and maintaining automation of system builds and clones

Designing, developing and maintaining the installation framework, applications and application specific installation solutions

Assisting with system installations

Performing investigations into issues discovered

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential

  • Experience in Windows operating systems
  • Experience in any structured programming language
  • An understanding of configuration management concepts

Desirable

  • Windows 7/10/Server 2008/2012/2016 functionality
  • Active directory and domain knowledge
  • Windows Scripting Tools - VB Script, PowerShell or Batch Job, .Net Framework and XML
  • Windows security features
  • Networks (architecture and protocols)

What we're looking for in you:

You will be able to work in a team environment with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. You will have a professional approach to dealing with the customer community, colleagues and suppliers.

Salary: Competitive

Location: New Malden

Benefits: Our employees receive an excellent benefits package which includes a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and a Company contributed Share Incentive Plan. We also offer a range of additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance programme, Cycle2work and many local and national employee discounts. Some employees may also be eligible for an annual incentive.

Combat Systems

We design, develop, integrate and provide through-life support to naval combat systems that enable navies to protect nations. Vital information from ship sensors such as radar and sonar, are captured through our core product, the Combat Management System. This advanced technological capability allows ships crews to rapidly respond to potentially life threatening situations.

In using this cutting-edge technology, we are at the forefront of defence system integration. Our products feature across the Royal Navy's surface fleet aboard Type 23 frigates, Type 45 destroyers and Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. The new Type 26 Global Combat Ships, under construction by BAE Systems in Glasgow, will also use the next generation of our combat systems.

We pride ourselves on being the combat systems integrator of choice, not only integrating our own products, but those of other defence companies too in delivering combat systems for both the Royal Navy and international customers.

Attracting and retaining the sharpest minds is essential for a globally competitive UK naval engineering business. BAE Systems is an equal opportunities employer and our aim is to recruit the very best talent and we welcome applications from a diverse range of people, from all backgrounds, with many different skills, experience and perspectives. Please note we will not use any personal information relating to your background at any stage of the application process.

Please be aware that many roles working for BAE Systems will be subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors including your nationality, any previous nationalities you have held, and/or your place of birth may limit those roles that you can perform for the organisation.
