The Opportunity
Applications are invited for the role of Head of UK Surface Launched Air Defence.  MBDA is the first truly integrated defence company in Europe and the only European one able to provided missiles and missile systems for each branch of the armed forces, whether in the air, at sea or in land. MBDA’s range of technologies and product consolidates the Group world leading position in the industry.
The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers who develop and maintain performance models to evaluate and prove complex missile and weapon systems within the Surface Launched Air Defence domain. This includes CAMM, CAMM-ER, Sea Ceptor, Land Ceptor, Sea Ceptor Plug in for SADM and MAADS. In addition the candidate will provide support to the French S&M team on FASGW.
 
What are we looking for?
  • You will have excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • You will favour a collaborative, open approach to leadership and have the ability to inspire others in order to reach, or exceed common goals and objectives. The models that you deliver will be used across multiple products and sites, so strong communication skills and the ability to motivate and -influence others is essential.
  • Ideally, you will have experience of leading teams who have undertaken model development and/or modelling studies
  • Have a good understanding of, and good working experience in all phases of the engineering life cycle.
  • It is desirable that you are able to achieve DV level security clearance once an employee of MBDA.
  • Able to work in an agile manner to deal with adapting programme deliveries and timescales
  • An appreciation of the verification and validation process

  • You will understand how Simulation and Modelling supports our weapon system products and gain insight into a number of related disciplines with whom we have a high level of interactions (e.g. Guidance Navigation & Control, Software, Hardware-in-the Loop, Systems Design & Validation, Seekers & Sensors, and Technical Quality).
  • You will gain an in-depth exposure to the Modelling tools and process (such as Mathworks) have the opportunity to develop relevant skills and apply them in developing large scale models to support MBDA’s portfolio of complex guided weapons products.
  • You will have the opportunity to work in an international discipline in MBDA. The Simulation and Modelling Function has team members in three MBDA sites (Bristol, Stevenage and Le Plessis Robinson) and has strong links to our MBDA site in Rome.
  • Many of the methods and tools we use in this domain are the result of strong collaboration, and consequently there may be the opportunity to work with external collaboratrors, Universities, and SME's, both within the UK and at our development sites in France and Italy.

    The Role
  • You will be a S&M Head and as such will resolve issues, including competing demands, sensitive situations and conflicts with your team members, who will report to you.
  • You will be responsible for the development and management all S&M Surface Launched Air Defence model development activities to time, cost and quality and Auto coded algorithms for delivery to software
  • This role includes involvement in all aspects of the development, integration, delivery into service and service support aspects; working to identify commons strands and efficient processes
  • You'll need to be adaptable and creative as this role combines project management, technical leadership and team building aspects. S&M Project Management is an important part of the role but it also includes a strong technical component.
  • You will lead, motivate, enthuse and develop your team to ensure effective staff deployment and development; and in collaboration with other related domains, will continually develop MBDA's S&M engineering capability. Given that there will be many competing demands from multiple projects, your strong communication skills will be essential.
  • This role is highly dependent on stakeholder management; so being sensitive and collaborative to a diverse set of stakeholders will be vital. Highly effective communication, persuasion and conflict resolutions skills will all be required to effectively deliver in this role.
  • You will be responsible for embedding new working practices within a challenging programme environment with tight deadlines and within a new framework of close cooperation with our Customer.
