Within the Flight Dynamics & Mission Analysis team of the Flight Operations Division, the Meteosat Flight Dynamics Engineer works on the engineering and operations of the flight dynamics systems for the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites and supports the development of the new Meteosat Third Generation satellite system in the areas of mission analysis, operations preparation, system integration and validation.

DUTIES

  • Flight dynamics support to routine, special and contingency in-orbit operations of MSG satellites, including:
  • Generation of flight dynamics products required by the ground segment, space segment and external services;
  • Maintenance of the operational orbit and attitude through execution of manoeuvres;
  • Evaluation of satellite performances and budgets;
  • Support to anomaly resolution and investigation;
  • Monitoring of space conjunctions between the MSG spacecraft and other space objects and implementation of risk mitigation actions;
  • Support to maintenance and evolution of the MSG flight dynamics software, operational guides and related database/configuration data, used for flight dynamics and conjunction management operations;
  • Definition and implementation of end-of-life operations for MSG satellites;
  • Support to MTG requirements engineering and relevant reviews, acceptance and operational validation of MTG flight dynamics software (before launch and during commissioning) and integration of operations with the existing flight dynamics concepts;
  • Flight dynamics support to the definition and execution of the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP), commissioning and routine operations phases of MTG spacecraft;
  • Execution of mission analysis studies for all MTG mission phases from LEOP to end-of-life;
    Support to procurement of tools for mission analysis;
  • Support to monitoring of external services for augmented tracking (e.g. telescope optical tracking) and follow-up services.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • In-depth knowledge of spaceflight mechanics (covering orbit and attitude dynamics and control), with specific knowledge for geostationary flight mechanics;
  • Knowledge of the NAPEOS software, FocusSuite and Autofocus would be an advantage;
  • Proven experience in operating and maintaining operational space flight dynamics systems;
  • Good experience in flight dynamics operations for geostationary satellites;
  • Knowledge of satellite AOCS design principles;
  • Knowledge of system engineering standards and methodologies in aspects relevant to space operational systems;
  • Knowledge of configuration management systems;
  • Knowledge of Unix systems and scripting languages;
  • Analysis, synthesis and presentation skills;
  • Sound problem solving skills, with proactive attitude and capability of work with a minimum supervision;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to apply these to interactions within a team and between teams;
  • A university degree in aerospace engineering or another relevant discipline;
  • Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.

This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,612 per month (net of internal tax) which may be negotiable based on skills and experience.
