Principal Chemist

Would you like to be part of an Advanced Engineering Challenge? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Chemist at our site in Barrow.

As a Principal Chemist, you will be responsible for a team of Chemists/ Senior Chemists (up to a maximum of 8).

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on the most advanced engineering challenge currently in build in the UK, will give you the opportunity to work on a large variety of different tasks - lab work is involved but there is much more to the role than just this

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Chemist will involve:

Deputise for the Engineering Manager (Chemistry) in his absence and represent the dept on chemistry related matters.

Liaise with outside agencies to assist in technical issues relating to the application of anechoic materials to submarine surfaces.

Responsible for the quality control of anechoic (SOURCING NOTE: non-echoing) material formulation as applied to submarine hull surfaces.

Principal technical advisor regarding selection and use of polymers and adhesives on-board submarine.

Responsible for calibration and operability of radioactive counting instrumentation in support of Power Range Testing , radioactive waste arising and NPL (National Physical Laboratories) round robin test samples

Departmental Radiological Protection Supervisor who will be required to carry out contingency exercises.

Co-ordinate testing of non-metallic materials for use on board submarine and reactor compartment compatibility.

Will be responsible for mentoring the performance of their team

Your skills and qualifications:

Degree qualified in Chemistry or closely related discipline (or higher education with significant relevant experience)

Experience of leading a team/ mentoring junior colleagues

Significant experience of working in a chemistry environment

Knowledge and understanding of COSHH and risk assessments
