Engineering Manager (Engineering Function, Software Engineering)

Would you like to play a pivotal role supporting engineering projects across Royal Navy submarine programmes? We currently have a vacancy for an Engineering Manager at one of our sites in Frimley or Barrow.

As an Engineering Manager, you will be working within the software discipline as part of the main Engineering function. You will own, develop and sustain domain capability plan(s) covering People, Process, Toolsets, Technology, Information and Facilities, and interface with Engineering Function Capability teams to ensure timely input to integrated business plans via the Domain Lead. This will involve reporting status of delivery of such a plan to enable onward reporting including Submarines, Maritime and Corporate functional reviews, to ensure the engineering capability within your discipline is fit for purpose.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to take control of and make a mark on a brand new role. You will help to determine the direction for this discipline for the whole business unit, across all programmes current and future. It will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills in capability management and will provide a good stepping stone into engineering leadership roles in the future. You will also have a good amount of interaction with senior stakeholders, as well as the chance to influence change.

Your main responsibilities as a Engineering Manager will involve:

Being the main point of contact on all resourcing and recruitment matters for software engineering.

Understanding the multiple programme and project demands to ensure a timely supply of engineers.

Supporting the Function by highlighting prioritisation decisions required for SQEP resources in software Engineering covering software development and acquisition to meet the programmes needs and the career development of individuals.

Ensuring the continued technical and professional development of the software engineering community to achieve and sustain the necessary SQEP and thus to ensure quality of engineering activities; managing the professional institution relationships in conjunction with the people capability core team.

Chairing meetings and workshops to develop improve and sustain processes within Software Engineering, deployed to all programmes. Supporting delivery of governance (compliance) and ensuring quality control of the application of software engineering processes across the Programmes.

Supporting development and maintenance of the domain plan for specialist toolsets across Software engineering, which in turn is integrated with the overall Engineering Toolsets strategy and plan in order to ensure engineering tools are fit for purpose and are as efficient as they can be.

Working with stakeholders to establish a technology plan for Software, which when integrated with the Domain Group technology plan, provides governance and optimises the development of new technology working closely with the Technology Capability team to ensure value and alignment to business direction.

Your skills and qualifications as a Engineering Manager:

Essential:

Related Engineering degree (or equivalent qualification or Royal Navy operator/submariner experience)

Appreciation and generalist understanding of Software

Desirable:

Engineering management/leadership/capability management experience

Chartered or working towards

You must possess excellent communication skills, alongside influencing ability to build effective relationships with a range of stakeholders and to be able to implement improvements. You must also have good organisational skills to be able to effectively prioritise your workload.
