Lead the fight against crime through technology

When it comes to crime-fighting technology, the Met’s at the cutting-edge. Our Technology, Research & Innovation (TRI) team is tasked with delivering new and emerging technology solutions by exploring the latest developments and adapting them, developing bespoke solutions from scratch or working with academia to research knowledge gaps.. It’s a hugely exciting area that’s evolving rapidly. As Head of IT Systems Development, you’ll be in the driving seat, leading the Met’s progress.

In this unique role, you’ll have the potential to make a direct impact on our work. The high-tech solutions that you deliver can make a world of difference as we strive to police and protect London.

Your main task is to lead a highly skilled IT Development team to create bespoke IT products and services for operational use in the field. It’s a hands-on role where you’ll work alongside Senior Technologists and Development Managers, developing requirements, allocating resources and managing a programme of development projects. You’ll be involved right from concept through to implementation and delivery – and you may also have the chance to take part in occasional field work. Whatever the project, you’ll be expected to manage stakeholders, partner and suppliers, while handling budgets and creating business cases. Security is a priority and you’ll make sure we follow procedures.

You’ll be an experienced manager with proven hands-on IT development experience who can lead IT development teams. You’ve managed IT programmes before, including major projects, and developed contracts and SLAs. You’ve also managed resources and conducted design reviews, while developing solutions in a range of areas. Your knowledge should cover at least some of the following and come with an all-round technical background.

  • General IT hardware and software
  • Programming in at least one object-oriented language (e.g. Java, C# or C++)
  • Databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server and Oracle Database)
  • Web development (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, ColdFusion, VB.NET)
  • Network Architecture development, implementation, testing and validation
  • Secure Network communications architectures including wired and wireless technologies
  • Network Communications data analysis
  • Penetration testing and IT health checking

Company

London covers 620 square miles and is home to millions of people speaking over 300 different languages. In this most vibrant and complex of cities, this presents an ever-evolving challenge for the Met when fighting to reduce crime - and the fear of crime.

Forging close relationships, building trust and understanding the issues within London’s different communities all form part of the fundamental platform on which effective, credible policing is built.
