Engineer - Material Technology (NDE Research)

We currently have a vacancy for an Engineer - Material Technology (NDE Research) at our site in Barrow.

As an Engineer - Material Technology (NDE Research), you will be supporting the delivery of Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) processes and the development, approval and implementation of new technologies.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work within a varied role in a developing area of the business.

Your main responsibilities as an Engineer - Material Technology (NDE Technology) will involve:

Supporting the conduct and development Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) processes and the development of the NDE Engineering capability at Barrow.

Planning and carrying out experimental trials of new NDE processes and providing sound technical justification to support approval and implementation into the business.

Supporting the provision of authoritative and timely NDE advice to Submarine programmes and the customer. Building and maintaining a close relationship with the NDE Quality department.

Monitoring new products and trends in the wider NDE sector. Proposing areas that merit research to ensure that appropriate techniques are available in support of current and future programmes.

Supporting undergraduates and post-graduates conducting NDE related research through Company sponsorship.

Supporting the planning and conduct of the Materials Technology Department Research Plan. Contributing to the review and maintenance of relevant Department Process Instructions, Workmanship Standards, Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments.

Contributing to the safe and effective provision of the Materials Technology Capability

Your skills and qualifications as an Engineer - Material Technology (NDE Research):

Essential:

Engineering/STEM background or practical experience in the application NDE processes

MS Office

Desirable:

Knowledge of the principle NDE methods including ultrasound and radiography

Knowledge of NDE process at submarines

Knowledge of inspection qualification and approval methodologies in other industrial sectors

PCN certification or similar in one of more NDE techniques

Degree-level qualification in Engineering/STEM area

Experience with MATLAB and/or other programming skills

Computer Aided Design experience

The ability to build and articulate recommendations based on combinations of experimental trials, technical literature and engineering judgement.

A drive to implement change for the benefit of the business and where appropriate question existing process

Self-motivated - ability to work with minimal supervision and investigate and scope out new opportunities

Communicate clearly and positively with a wide variety of NDE stakeholders. This including production teams, engineers and the customer in addition to academics, research students and other industrial experts in the wider NDE community.
