Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) are looking for a Field Installation and Commissioning Engineer to join the Estates Team. The role will be based in Cambridge but will involve regular duty in the polar regions, principally at Halley VI Research Station.

This role will be responsible for the yearly commissioning and decommissioning of the stations LTHW/ HVAC and CHP systems as well as the planning, procurement and installation of any additional electrical services required at Halley research station, the ongoing maintenance of the electrical services including controls, fire safety systems, lighting and power.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in electrical installation and maintenance on a multi-function site. You will need knowledge of various electrical installations from 3phase distribution to control systems. You will also need excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to work cohesively in remote environments.

Purpose

Due to the Changing dynamic of Halley Research station, we have an opportunity for a Field installation and commissioning Engineer with electrical bias to work alongside the Facilities Engineer.

You report to the Facilites engineer and be responsible for the yearly commissioning and decommissioning of the stations LTHW/ HVAC and CHP systems as well as the planning, procurement and installation of any additional electrical services required at Halley research station, the ongoing maintenance of the electrical services including controls, fire safety systems, lighting and power.

You will be required to work in Cambridge office in the UK summer and required to spend up to 4 months at Halley during the UK winter. Knowledge of Halley is beneficial but not essential.

You must be comfortable working in an office environment and being a hands on engineer as well as part of the station management team and relish the challenge working remotely in a challenging environment.

The ideal candidate should have good communication skills, be adaptive and responsive to the ever-changing environment of the Antarctic.

Qualification

NVQ, HNC or BTEC in appropriate discipline.

Duties

Office based duties:

• Design electrical installations

• Create material take offs and quotations for procurement

• Ensure safety and compliance of all electrical installations and systems

• Plan the season work load working with various stakeholders to achieve BAS science objectives

• Produce a comprehensive commissioning procedure for Halley

• Manage stock, material and tooling for ongoing maintenance.

• Update CAFM systems with new maintenance requirements

• Assist the Facilities engineer with the season planning, including procurement of spares & consumables

On site duties:

• Ensure the electrical safety of Halley Research station

• Working with the mechanical engineer, commission LTHW/ HVAC and CHP systems

• Carrying out the commissioning, maintenance and repair of electrical control systems

• Be hands on to complete low voltage electrical installations work

• Perform general maintenance task as prescribed by the CAFM tool

• Co-ordinate the technical team and implement planned works

• Document design changes, commissioning progress, site reports

• Co-ordinate and/ or carry out periodical tests and inspections of electrical installations.

• Be a proactive member of the station management & engineering teams

• Adhering and working to health and safety legislations

• Adherence to company policies and procedures

What we are looking for:

• Experience and knowledge of BMS controls and commissioning (Schneider preferable)

• Experience and knowledge in control software and hardware interfaces

• Fault finding experience in control panels and wiring

• Design basic electrical installations and alterations

• Hands on experience in cable management, cable termination. SWA/ H07 and panel control wiring

Additional requirement but not essential:

• Knowledge and understanding of electrical statutory compliance works

• Knowledge and understanding of the Fire reform order 2005

• Knowledge of diesel power generation CHP systems

• Mechanical knowledge of LTHW and HVAC systems

Mechanical engineering

Mechanical engineers work hand-in-hand with scientists to provide bespoke frontline science support across an exciting, diverse range of research programmes. Along with other specialist engineers, projects can include airborne survey systems (radar and cameras), meteorology instruments, hot water drilling equipment, ice coring machinery, space weather sensors such as very low frequency receivers, and even penguin weighbridges!

Mechanical engineers are based at Cambridge, and can be deployed on ships or stations, or into remote fieldwork locations.

Electrical engineering

Like mechanical engineers, electrical engineers work closely with scientists and other engineers to deliver unique pieces of equipment to support frontier science, as descibed above.

IT engineering

IT engineers provide equipment and support for everyone in the organisation. Some IT engineers work alongside mechanical and electrical engineers on bespoke equipment for frontier science, as above. Others are service desk engineers and network engineers whose critical role is to keep business systems up and running.

Predominantly based in our Cambridge offices IT engineers acan also spend time on ships or stations in the polar regions.

Marine engineering

BAS employs two types of marine engineers:  a Cambridge-based team who are responsible for refitting and maintenance of all the science, propulsion and navigation equipment onboard ships;  and mariners such as the Chief Engineer, 2nd, 3rd and 4th engineers who work at sea to ensure ships equipment and systems run smoothly while on polar research or operational missions.

Aircraft Engineering

BAS operates two aircraft types (DHC-6 and DHC-7) primarily in the Antarctic, but also worldwide. BAS holds the necessary regulatory approved CAMO (Continued Airworthiness Management Organisation) function for these aircraft.  As such BAS has a small cell of dedicated aircraft engineering management staff within the Air Unit, based at Cambridge, to assure continuous airworthiness compliance, oversight, control and give direction to our contracted aircraft engineers on any work necessary to maintain and assure continued airworthiness in service in the world’s most challenging operating environments. The direct aircraft scheduled maintenance and rectification is accomplished through our approved contracted aircraft engineering entities, currently based in Canada.

Vehicle mechanics

Operating stations and vehicles in extreme climates such as the polar regions requires skilled mechanics and technicians to maintain, repair and deploy vehicles including Snowmobiles, Pisten-Bullys and Bulldozers. Mechanics can be based at Cambridge for five months before being deployed to support operations in Antarctica.
