Job Details

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non-departmental public body created through the Energy Act 2004 and our mission is to clean up the legacy from the UK’s earliest nuclear sites, safely, securely and with care for people and the environment.

Although our mission remains the same, the way in which we organise ourselves is evolving. Under One NDA, we are transforming how we manage our businesses by building a more efficient and effective nuclear decommissioning innovation capability through increased interaction with universities, other research institutions and the supply chain.

Reporting to the Head of Technology, we require a Head of Technical Assurance to lead, develop and implement technical assurance for the NDA group – ensuring we understand how technical risk is managed and opportunities are identified. This will enable NDA to technically underpin key sanction decisions. To ensure a consistent approach is developed and implemented will require leading a community of practice across the Group. Accessing external expertise will be important as well as building internal capability. Ensuring the right technical governance is in place across the Group to enable technical underpinning is important, linking with our NDA Research Board and the Nuclear Waste and Decommissioning Research Forum. Having the right information to support technical underpinning and strategic decisions is essential. This role is also accountable for the UK Radioactive Waste Inventory and developing relevant strategies for how we manage our materials and samples, enabling us to support research and development programmes.

With a scientific or research & development background in an appropriate STEM field, you will have past experience of developing and implementing technical underpinning and assurance approaches and be able to extract relevant factors, carry out review and capture recommendations. You will have an established ability to communicate complex information in an accessible way and exert leadership and influence to drive this area forwards. You will exhibit strong stakeholder engagement skills and attention to detail to deliver key accountabilities with Government including the UK Radioactive Waste Inventory.

Working with Executive and functional leads from across the NDA group, your open style of leadership and collaborative focus will help create alignment with organisational and stakeholder needs. You will interface with relevant leads from government departments, regulators, site license companies and other external organisations, sharing and gaining good practice from other sectors in developing sustainable, trail blazing approaches to delivering effective technical assurance.

Closing date for applications is: Wednesday 24th July 2019

Company

This involves decommissioning and demolishing all buildings, as well as treatment and disposal of associated waste, both radioactive and conventional.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non-departmental public body created through the Energy Act 2004.

We employ just over 200 staff. Our headquarters are based in west Cumbria. We own 17 sites across England, Wales and Scotland, some dating back to the 1940s, plus the associated liabilities and assets.

We report to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS); for some aspects of our work in Scotland, we are responsible to Scottish ministers.

Our role is strategic: we establish the overall approach, allocate budgets, set targets and monitor progress.

We do not have a hands-on role in cleaning up our facilities. Instead, we deliver our mission through others, primarily 12 businesses.
