Naval Architect
Would you like to play a key role in the Design Services Naval Architecture team helping to provide solutions in support of the Royal Navy (RN) surface fleet worldwide? We currently have a vacancy for a Naval Architect at our site in Portsmouth.
As a Naval Architect, you will be responsible for providing naval architecture capability across a broad spectrum of projects across many platforms and vessels including the Queen Elizabeth Carrier and will be working in close collaboration with Design Engineering and the MOD.
This role is suitable for entry level graduates who are looking to develop a career in this area and will offer excellent career progression and support to achieve Chartership status.
Your main responsibilities as a Naval Architect will involve:
Structural designs for ship capability upgrades using a mixture of:
- linear and non-linear FEATime-domain dynamic FEATheoretical methodsClassification Society standards and requirements
Demonstrating Ship stability safety:
- Conducting inclining experiments to MoD standardsPerforming stability analysis and standards complianceCompiling stability books and operator guidance to MoD standards
Dry-docking consultancy:
- Generating technical information to allow safe docking of shipsDock infrastructure studies - caissons, dock furniture, dock capacityOverseeing dry docking of ships
Supporting ship refits at the waterfront by providing engineering knowledge
Your skills and qualifications as a Naval Architect:
Essential:
Degree/MEng in Naval Architecture, /Marine Technology/Ship Science
Experience of CAD software such as AutoCAD, Inventor
Desirable:
Structural analysis, both theoretical and ideally using FEA, preferably ANSYS Workbench
Familiarity of naval architectural software, preferably PARAMARINE
Understanding of the whole ship engineering design process
Understanding of the hydro mechanic aspects of surface ship design, principally stability
