Would you like to play a vital role in the Design Services Naval Architecture team helping to provide solutions in support of the Royal Navy (RN) surface fleet worldwide? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Principal Naval Architect at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Senior Principal Naval Architect, you will be responsible for delivering naval architecture capability across a number of domains to meet the needs of Warship Support internal projects and the customer programmes.

This role will provide you with a great deal of variety working cross-platform and across different classes of vessels including the Queen Elizabeth Carrier. You will be part of the Centre of Excellence for the function and will liaise closely with Design Engineering and the MOD

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Principal Naval Architect will involve:

Managing multiple tasks ensuring quality such as:

Structural designs for ship capability upgrades using a mixture of:

• linear and non-linear FEATime-domain dynamic FEATheoretical methodsClassification Society standards and requirements

Ship stability safety:

• Conducting inclining experiments to MoD standardsPerforming stability analysis and standards complianceCompiling stability books and operator guidance to MoD standards

Dry-docking consultancy:

• Generating technical information to allow safe docking of shipsDock infrastructure studies - caissons, dock furniture, dock capacityOverseeing dry docking of ships

Supporting ship refits at the waterfront by providing engineering knowledge

Mentoring other team members and developing them technically

Providing assurance to the Design Authority that tasks are fit for purpose

Leading small teams of naval architects or multi-disciplinary teams

Your skills and qualifications as a Senior Principal Naval Architect:

Qualified to degree level, preferably MEng, in Naval Architecture, /Marine Technology/Ship Science

Chartered Engineer (CEng) as a member of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or eligible for it

Deep knowledge and understanding of dry-docking theory and practice

Significant structural analysis experience, both theoretical and using FEA, preferably ANSYS Workbench

Engineering material selection and use, particularly according to British Standards/ Euronorms/ Classification Society standards

Caisson design and operation and GRP and steel ship repair methods and procedures

Thorough knowledge of surface ship design standards and processes (IMO, NES, DefStan, Classification Rules)

Understanding of the whole ship engineering design process, based on knowledge and experience from a variety of military platforms

Understanding and experience of the hydro-mechanic aspects of surface ship design, principally stability analysis

Good working knowledge of naval architectural software, particularly PARAMARINE and experience of CAD software such as AutoCAD, Inventor

Have a strong awareness of Product Safety and SHE
