Assistant Design Engineer

Would you like to have a fantastic opportunity to join the BAE Systems Maritime Services Design Team? We currently have a vacancy for an Assistant Design Engineer at our site Portsmouth.

Owing to our expansion, opportunities have arisen to join an exciting new era in BAE Systems Maritime Services business, supporting some of the most advanced warships in the world. This role will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to be part of and help shape the future support of world class ships.

The Assistant Design Engineer has considerable prospects to be developed into a Design Engineer working at the forefront of designs that integrate new systems into warships. The successful candidate will be developed both practically and academically on a career ladder that provides the opportunities to reach a Principal Design Engineer. Whether leaving College or in employment as an electrician (or similar electrical trade) this may be a future for you.

The Assistant Design Engineer will join a vibrant and expanding team who primarily develop guidance for Alteration & Addition to Combat System and Electrical power distribution systems (Design Solutions, Drawings, Statements of Work, validation reports and Configuration Control) for warships and also provide technical expertise for queries raised by ship repair and other business areas.

Your main responsibilities as an Assistant Design Engineer will involve:

On board RN and international platforms, assist with line checking and 'As Fit' surveys updating the differences to cable data sheets and drawings.

Complete Ship Datum Pack and configuration control updates with the use of AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel as well as assist with the production of electrical drawings and pastor diagrams.

As directed, populate Power Books and Load Charts.

Fabricate cable identification tallies from cable data sheets.

Refurbish internal communications components and units.

Assisting the Design Engineers in design, engineering support, ships surveys and trials.

Developing your skills and experience to become a Design Engineer.

Your skills and qualifications:

From formal training and/or practical experience, possess a basic understanding of electrical engineering principles - Ohm's and Kirchoff's Laws in particular.

Ability to carry out basic electrical testing and fault finding with minimal supervision - not required from an academic background.

Typically 5 GCSEs qualified, likely to be in a technology, mathematics or science related discipline or might be working towards an ONC or City and Guilds in Electrical Engineering.

AutoCAD (can train if not held)

Microsoft Office competence, especially Excel.

You must have a very strong desire to learn new skills and develop within the design field of engineering.

Possess an inquisitive nature that is supported by the confidence to question and seek guidance as necessary. The ability to face and enjoy regular challenges to provide ideas and solutions.

Effective spoken and written communication skills, embrace an awareness and support all aspects of SHE.
