About the role

Here at Babcock International we’re looking to recruit Principal Engineer Electrical and Electronic to join the team.

Operating within the CWEW Technical Department, the role is to undertake technical activities in support of the Technical Department across all weapon systems supported at CWEW (4.5” Gun, Phalanx, Harpoon, Triper and future bid opportunities) including developing design task proposals and requirements and lead design solutions to improve availability, reliability and maintainability.

You will identify areas for improvement for factory processes, tooling and test equipment and provide engineering solutions for technical problems encountered during production and test. Perform data analysis to determine root causes and identify shortcomings and improvements and manage tasks from concept through to implementation to defined safety standards, cost, programme and quality.

The post holder shall provide oversight and assurance for all electrical/ electronic design output of the Technical Support Team, for designs, production drawings, trials and technical reports. Where required, the post holder shall provide mentorship of junior members of the team and graduates on development placements.

The candidate should have excellent communication skills and a drive to solve technical issues to the satisfaction across the team. Presentation skills will be essential for representing DST through design reviews and presenting design solutions to both internal and external customers. Stakeholder management is essential in this role to ensure internal and external groups are working towards common goals in a timely and acceptable manner.

 

What do I need to do the role?

You’ll need to have Knowledge of relevant weapon system standards and systems (DEF STAN/ BS EN/ BR) for design, qualification and acceptance.  You will be an experienced developer of electrical/ electronic hardware and software systems and an experienced user of CAD systems for design, modelling, calculations and analysis for electronic systems.

 

Would also like you to have experience in all or some of these areas:

 

  • Knowledge of electrical/ electronic components and circuits for analogue, digital and Radio Frequencies (RF) assemblies (filters, amplifiers, logic circuits, power supplies etc).
  • Experienced user of test instruments for electrical, electronic and RF equipment (Multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analysers, spectrum analysers, vector network analysers).
  • Experienced designer, through concept and detailed stages, producing substantiation and qualification data. Competent at performing root cause analysis and FMECA studies.
  • Knowledge of weapon system control theory.


Lastly, you’ll need to have a Masters Degree level in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering discipline and a Chartered Engineer (IET)
 
What else do I need to have?

  • Full UK passport and Full UK driving licence.
  • The Successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.
  • The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require enhanced security and regular screening checks.

DST supports a wide range of exciting design, manufacture and Equipment support projects, and works with a number of key clients both domestically and internationally. The DST team operates out from the Combined Weapons Electrical Workshop (CWEW) situated in the Granby Yard enclave at Devonport. The team currently undertake defect rectification, repair, overhaul and operational support on a wide range of weapon systems and naval equipment in support of the Royal Navy.
