Apply your knowledge and experience to working on the research and design of components and systems exposed to some of the harshest environments possible. 
The UK Atomic Energy Authority has an excellent opportunity for an engineer or scientist to join their team within the Engineering Realisation Group in the Central Engineering Department. 

As part of the Engineering Realisation Group, you could be involved in R&D projects developing novel solutions for a wide array of complex technical and engineering problems, supporting the Central Engineering Department`s broader activities. This role is an opportunity to drive projects that may cover low Technology Readiness Level concepts through Commercial-off-the-shelf products, to life extension of components/installations. This will involve collaborating with other organisations and will require good communication skills. A broad range of skills and experience are needed for these roles such as, but not limited to, thermal and structural design, NDT and in situ health monitoring, design, commissioning and running of experiments, manufacturing and joining, additive manufacture, synthesis of materials and magnetics and superconductors. 

Key accountabilities/responsibilities include: 
-Use experience to provide state-of-the-art knowledge to UKAEA projects and to investigate new innovative concepts concerning a broad range of topics as needed and drive development in areas of expertise. 
-Contribute to planning, undertake delivery and evaluation of testing and prototyping projects that address the feasibility and optimisation of manufacture for complex components and assemblies and the effects of harsh environments on required component performance 
-Leading packages of work in these research, testing, prototyping and/or development activities, oversee small multi-disciplinary teams involving internal and external personnel, assuring the quality and safety of these activities. 
-Propose, secure funding and contribute to delivery of novel projects aligned with internal strategy (e.g. EUROFUSION PPPT, Enabling Research, EPSRC, PhD, Masters placements, graduate placements, Horizon 2020) 
-Work with external collaborators (including universities, public sector research establishments and industry in fusion and related fields) creating links in order to complement UKAEA`s internal capability, offer access to additional expert knowledge and to facilitate new project proposals. 
-Present completed novel activities at conferences and to submit associated papers for journal publication 

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. Knowledge skills and experience 

Essential 
-Degree or higher in engineering, physics, chemistry, technology or similar science 
-Highly self-motivated and demonstrates initiative 
-Demonstrated experience in implementation of specialist science/ engineering skills in R&D programmes 
-Demonstrable ability to manage R&D work packages and project planning 
-Good verbal and written communication and diplomatic skill 
-Knowledge of issues affecting material and component performance in harsh environment 
-Possession or significant progress towards accreditation with a professional body (e.g. CEng) preferred 

Desirable 
-Background or experience of multi-disciplinary R&D programmes 
-Knowledge and experience of preparing research proposals and/or project planning 
-Experience of developing complex experiments and testing equipment 
-Experience of overseeing technicians, junior staff and/or students preferred 
-Understanding of governance, H&S and compliance issues

Selection Method: 

-As part of the selection process you may be expected to complete work based simulation exercises and a personality profile either online or onsite.
