Principal Engineer - Vulnerability and Shock



Would you like an exciting new position on the Type 26 programme, the Global Combat Ship (T26) will be a highly capable and versatile multi-mission warship designed to support anti-submarine warfare, air defence and general purpose operations anywhere on the world's ocean. A team of engineers are working to mature the detailed design and support solution for the ship. The Type 26 will replace the UK's Type 23 frigates, with the first set to enter service in the 2020s and the last remaining in service beyond the middle of the century. This is an exciting, large scale, long term project and we'd love you to join our team.


The role of the Principal Engineer - Vulnerability & Shock is to provide engineering support to the shock design of the Type 26 Platform. The main objective of this team is to reduce the ship's vulnerability to underwater explosion from threats such as mines and torpedoes.


This role will provide you with an opportunity to use your existing experience and lead a team of engineers supporting this large scale programme.



Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer will involve:


Ensuring suppliers are compliant with the Type 26 shock requirements by assessing their designs, shock qualification proposals and shock results


Act as the technical lead within engineering for the Composite Armour procurement package to ensure the armour solution applied to Type 26 is optimised to balance the needs of all stakeholders within the project and in support of the Magazine Safety Case


Liaise with the composite armour supplier and supply chain lead to ensure timely delivery of engineering data for the armour solution


Provide support to Engineering Manager - Vulnerability and Shock in Assurance and Acceptance events, Assurance Reviews and Quarterly Margin Reviews



Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Engineer:


Essential Skills:


Experience of designing equipment to meet structural requirements


Working knowledge of the engineering life cycle and the relationship between activities in different phases of the engineering lifecycle


Capable of problem definition within a system, identifying, implicit and explicit boundaries, interfaces, constraints and requirements.


Technical knowledge of modelling and verification techniques for transversals and experience using CAD/Foran


Previous experience of managing or supervising a team of engineers



Desirable Skills:

Proficient user of MS packages including excel


Technical knowledge of platform design and integration for naval surface or submarines would be preferable
