The Opportunity

Mechanical Architects are involved in all aspects of missile development, from the early concept studies to series production support within MBDA. Typically they will be establishing a physical configuration of the whole missile, or technically managing electro-mechanical subsystems within the missile or the equipment around it. It’s an excellent opportunity for someone wanting to build on their design experience and progress to a more senior technical role, such as Chief Design Engineer.

The Role

Architecture Development:
  • Capture and manage the missile mechanical architecture requirements to achieve the missile performance and cost
  • Ensure functional and mechanical requirementsare flown down to the sub-assemblies
  • Manage mechanical design studies and trade-offs, select concepts
  • Make technology readiness assessments to de-risk the development cycle
  • Ensure designs meet certain policies eg modularity
  • Sub-System/Equipment Management:
  • Produce & develop Statements of Work, Technical Specifications, Environmental Requirements, Interface specifications
  • Be the Requirement Authority for the sub-system / Equipment provider
  • Be the technical interface to the project team
  • Support integration activities of the sub system into the builds
  • Product Readiness:
  • Provide regular technical status to the project / CDE
  • Assess design complexity and maturity
  • Manage design reviews, concept and vendor selections
  • Support Phase Gate reviews
  • Build Management:
  • Manage prototype and development builds
  • Manage technical changes
  • Support ramp into production
  • Control product structures, build process & build standards
  • Verification:
  • Define, monitor and manage the functional and mechanical verification of the missile / sub-system
  • Define and manage the environmental verification plan
  • Produce justification evidence of performance, support certification of the design
  • Project Management:
  • Produce plans, define resource requirements to meet development objectives within budget
  • Identify risks and opportunities during the development phases
  • Manage & influencemultiple stakeholders from various functions, internal and external
  • Control any assigned budgets, manage personal workload and identify any further resource needs
What's in it for you?
  • Coming from a design background it’s an obvious career progression from a design role to Mechanical Architect, as it gives the opportunity to experience a broader view of the development process through interaction with Systems Designers, Chief Engineers and Suppliers. Longer-term, there are opportunities to become a Team Leader within the Chief Design Engineer (CDE) Project teams as an interim step to becoming a CDE.
What’s great about joining this team?
  • There are about 30 staff within the Mechanical Architecture UK Functional Team, who are all collocated with their Project Teams in Stevenage. You will be working for the Project CDE and interact with a broad range of other Functions within MBDA, but have a high degree of autonomy and represent the Project / Function in many meetings.
What are we looking for?
  • Ideally educated to degree level (or equivalent) with significant experience of mechanical engineering and stakeholder management
  • Ability to technically manage internal and sub-contract activities
  • Strong leadership skills, able to establish a clear engineering vision
  • Good knowledge and experience of mechanical & electro-mechanical design, including:
  • Static & Dynamic Analysis
  • Design for Environment, Design for Cost
  • Thermal Management
  • Good understanding of broader engineering disciplines, such as:
  • Aerodynamics
  • Materials
  • Vibration, Shock, Fatigue
  • Design for Manufacture
  • Six Sigma & Lean Design, Critical Parameter Management, Systems Engineering V-model, Test Design eg DoE
  • Experience developing proving logic and managing the generation of compliance evidence towards Certificates of Design
  • Experience across the full Product Life Cycle
  • Ability to influence senior managers and other stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal and well developed communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Willingness to travel within UK and Europe when appropriate
  • MBDA UK require all employees to achieve and maintain SC security clearance or above without restrictions that will inhibit the individual’s ability to fulfil the requirements of the role. Your eligibility for the appropriate level of security clearance may be discussed with you during the recruitment process. Any existing clearance holders may be able to transfer clearance (subject to approval).
