Principal Safety Engineer

Are you looking to apply your Safety Engineering knowledge and expertise to the design of cutting edge systems for the UK's existing and future submarine fleet? BAE Systems have opportunities for Principal Safety Engineers to join the Combat Systems Team based in a variety of locations in the South of England.

The Combat System encompasses the submarine's 'fight capability'. This includes its ability to carry out all of the below whilst remaining undetected by other parties:

Detect targets above and below the water

Circumnavigate the globe underwater

Intercept and send communications

Load and fire weapons and countermeasures

Joining the Combat Systems team will give you a unique and exciting opportunity to apply your knowledge and experience to a range of complex systems and platforms. You could be working on existing submarines such as the in-service Astute class, new classes currently in the design stage, and even future programmes which are looking at concept designs for submarines that won't be in service for generations.

As a Principal Safety Engineer you will be carrying out a range of Safety Engineering activities and analyses on all areas of the combat system, including navigation, command and control, and communication systems. This work will contribute to the development and maintenance of Def Stan 00-56 safety cases, to demonstrate that the safety risks of operating the submarine are as low as reasonably practicable.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal System Safety Engineer will involve:

Developing functional safety justifications for defence systems based on claims, argument and evidence

Organising and contributing to Hazard Identification workshops and Safety Committee meetings

Carrying out and analysing results of studies such as Failure Mode & Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, to gather evidence to support the safety case

Engaging with third parties, such as equipment or system suppliers, to review and gather supporting safety case evidence

Production and maintenance of Safety Case documentation (plans, policies and reports) to support project milestones

Conducting Risk Management in accordance with Def Stan 00-56

Reporting the progress of Safety Engineering activities at Project and Programme reviews

As a PrincipalSafety Engineer you will be expected to work autonomously communicating with system subject matter experts, MoD customers, system users (Royal Navy) and Technical Authorities for CS sub-systems.

Working within an established Safety Management System you will bring your expertise and experience to make recommendations for improvements where appropriate, at the same time keeping abreast of changing safety standards and industry best-practice.

As a Principal Safety Engineer you will use your experience and knowledge to mentor and support junior engineers through their career development.

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal System Safety Engineer:

Demonstrable experience in safety engineering safety and activities contributing to the production of platform-level safety cases

Relevant engineering qualification such as BEng/ MEng or equivalent

Broad knowledge of industry safety standards (such as Def Stan 00-56, IEC 61508 or similar)

What we're looking for in you:

We are looking for you to be hardworking, self-motivated and driven, with the ability to prioritise your workload appropriately. You will be adaptable, as you will be exposed to a wide variety of engineering problems, often troubleshooting to meet project deadlines.

Location:

For the right candidate, we will consider any of our Southern sites:
