Small Craft Naval Architect

Based in HM Naval base Portsmouth (PNB), BAE Systems Small Boat business is set up to manufacture and repair a wide range of military specification small boats for both the Ministry of Defence and other military and commercial customers. We currently have a vacancy for an experienced Small Craft Naval Architect at our site in Portsmouth.

 

 

As an experienced Small Craft Naval Architect, you will be providing solutions in support of bids, research and development, and post design projects for small craft.

 

This role will provide you with the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities including design through to delivery and in-service support whilst conducting tasks such as structural and stability analysis. You will also lead individual engineering projects and develop requirements for new products.

The small boats sector is responsible for the design, build and support of small boats to the military market. Your main responsibilities as a Small Craft Naval Architect will involve:

 

Collating evidence and present solutions so as to provide assurance to the SDA and other stakeholders

 

Leading engineering projects from requirements definition through to delivery and providing sound estimates for engineering work carried out

 

Conducting naval architecture tasks such as structural analyses, stability analyses, inclining experiments and concept design and provide technical guidance to other team members

 

Conducting all activities in a professional manner delivering naval architecture design solutions to agreed time, cost and quality to meet project or business milestones

 

Participating in a wide range of activities including concept design, detailed design, support to build, delivery and in-service support to the small boats sector

 

Ensuring that work is undertaken in accordance with Company, Safety, Environmental, contractual and local business processes, standards, procedures and documentation

 

Drafting, vetting and editing technical reports or other documents relevant to, or required by, a particular task in order to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients

 

Participating in the preparation and submission of technical proposals and tenders as directed by bid the manager in order to provide costed proposals for future work under the authority of the SDA


Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Qualified to degree level in Naval Architecture /Power craft Design.

 

 

Demonstrable knowledge and, ideally, experience in a minimum of five of the following:

 

- Have the ability to lead engineering projects.

- Small craft design from concept through to delivery.

- Small Craft design standards and processes (IMO, MCA, ISO, DefStan, Classification Rules)

- Vessel powering and performance analysis.

- Small Craft systems design including electrical, fuel bilge etc.

- 3D modelling, ideally using Siemens NX, and 2D drafting knowledge and experience.

- Stability analysis, ideally using Maxsurf.

- GRP design and repair knowledge

- Aluminium design and repair knowledge

- Structural analysis, both theoretical and using FEA,

- Conducting and analysing Inclining Experiments.

- Requirements Capture.


Desirable:

 

Already or on course to be Professionally Registered (CEng) as a member of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or equivalent.

Awareness of Product Safety and SHE and the participation in HAZIDs.

Knowledge of commercial and/or military small craft.
