Heathrow Career Returners Programme

It takes great people and great teamwork to welcome the 210,000 passengers (and counting) who pass through our doors each day. Life with us means exploring unlimited opportunities – and making a real difference as we strive towards achieving our vision of providing the best airport service in the world.

Our teams bring together a variety of experiences and perspectives, so that our colleagues can challenge the status quo, innovate and push each other to be better every day. As Heathrow grows, we’re on a journey to grow our people too, with inspirational leaders and role models at every level of our organisation.

Why join our Career Returners Programme?

The Heathrow Career Returners Programme is a pathway back into a professional role for those who have taken a career break. You will bring your established skills and business experience to Heathrow, as you take on a role within our operation or corporate functions. Through a structured six-month placement starting in November 2019, you will complete meaningful work in a supportive environment, whilst exploring opportunities for continuing a career at Heathrow. You will receive specialised coaching, together with mentoring and training support.

This opportunity is open to anyone who has been on a career break for two or more years. This could consist of a period of continuous absence from the workplace, or a period where you have been working outside of your established professional career.

At Heathrow we value diversity and this programme will provide the platform for you to mature your own individual strengths. We recognise that returning to work after a long break can prove challenging – so we’ll do all that we can to make the transition smooth. We embrace agile and flexible approaches to working, and we’re committed to supporting all our colleagues to find the right work-life balance.

Engineering at Heathrow

Engineering is the lifeblood of Heathrow. Our engineering teams work across the airport on a huge range of state-of-the-art development, construction and maintenance projects. Together, they are responsible for £14bn worth of assets, including 4 million square metres of airfield pavements, 180km of roads, 33 surface car parks, 50 tunnels and 31 bridges, not to mention the largest private water distribution system in Europe.

It takes talented teams working behind the scenes to keep our airport running smoothly. It’s meaningful, wide-reaching work. From water to energy, rail to roads, our engineering and asset management teams work across the airport on a huge range of development, construction, facilities management and maintenance projects; from our automated transport pods to our biomass energy plant.

Our Technical Services team provide the function with a Centre of Expertise, ensuring that we deliver high quality safety, technical and engineering leadership to the business. The team set asset management and system design strategy, policy and technical standards.

What does the role involve?

Your role could see you become involved in projects from across the asset lifecycle – whether requirement, concept, design, build or maintenance. You’ll be part of the team who set the strategies and standards for the business to follow.

As part of the role, you’ll be conducting strategic reviews – identifying opportunities for technical and business improvement. You will drive innovation, developing business cases and high-quality investment papers. You’ll be supporting the business with technical investigations, and leading engineering’s acceptance of products and materials. You will also have the chance to address internal and external recommendations, and complete audit actions.

We will support you to develop and upkeep asset plans and standards, reflecting our broader strategy. You will understand how our assets perform in terms of life cycle cost, service performance and risk – allowing you to deliver and communicate continuous improvement plans.

Who are we looking for?

The ideal returner for Engineering would be an experienced engineer with a technical background and professional qualifications, whether through an HNC programme or a degree. Don’t worry if you’re not currently using your engineering skills in practice, you’ll be provided with support to refresh your technical skills throughout the role.

Most importantly, we’re looking for enthusiastic individuals who wish to return to their successful careers, bringing with them the wealth of knowledge and skills acquired through both their professional and personal experiences.

  • Good knowledge and strong experience of maintenance practices, methodologies and strategies, with knowledge of whole life cost principles and their application
  • Strong analytical skills, with proven ability to use data to drive continuous improvement
  • Proven experience developing contingency plans and resilience analysis within large operational and infrastructure organisations
  • Experience of developing business cases, with the ability to translate data and technical knowledge meaningfully to demonstrate business benefits

Ideally, we would like you to have some knowledge of the airport environment, but this is not essential. We will work with you over the six-month programme to help bring you up to speed on the latest developments and support you in your own personal growth.

What rewards do we offer?

As well as competitive salaries, we’re committed to providing you with a whole host of great benefits that make this an even more rewarding place to work. They include an excellent pension scheme, life assurance, access to private health insurance and a share in our success scheme. Not only that, when you get here, we’ll nurture your skills and do all we can to help you reach your full potential.

A career with us also means being part of an organisation that cares about the community. Our plan is to meet growing passenger demand in a sustainable way that creates a positive impact on our community – and the environment. That’s why, by 2030, we want at least half of all journeys to the airport to be made by public and sustainable transport. We have a range of initiatives designed to help people to get to and from work sustainably, from subsidised public transport through to car sharing and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Join us, and you’ll have everything you need to succeed and explore the countless career destinations that are available here.

As an equal opportunities employer, we encourage applications from a diverse range of individuals. We believe that diverse talent makes us stronger – not least because we welcome passengers from all corners of the globe, every single day. At Heathrow we’re an accessible place to work, driven by inclusivity and celebrating individuality. For more information, please visit our diversity & inclusion page on careers.heathrow.com.

Company

Engineering at Heathrow is unlike engineering at any other organisation. The sheer scale and scope of what we do means that we’re very much a city within a city. Think 201,000 passengers arriving and departing each day (that’s around 73 million people a year). Four active terminals – the largest of which covers 353,020 square metres. And literally thousands of colleagues, all striving to achieve one thing: making every journey better.
