Human Factors Engineer

Would you like to play a key role in the implementation of human factors safety across multiple submarine programmes? We currently have a vacancy for a Human Factors Engineer at our site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

As a Principal Engineer - Human Factors, you will be responsible for implementing and ensuring human factors safety across several areas including both Dreadnought and Astute Class Submarines, multiple facility design projects and COMAH related areas. You will sit within a large Human Factors department and report to the Human Factors Safety Engineering Manager. You will be required to work closely with stakeholders including Safety Case teams, Engineers, Project teams and End Users (Operators).

This role will allow you to enhance your skills in a wide range of Human Factors domains and provide opportunity to influence designs of complex systems and equipment to demonstrate these are safe and effective for the end users.

Your main responsibilities as a Human Factors Engineer will involve:

Writing Human Factors Implementation Plans (HFIP)

Updating the Human Factors (HF) Issues Registers

Attending workshops and supporting Hazard Identification (HAZID) meetings

Providing HF input to the Fault Schedule

Assessment of operator claims including production of Human Error Probability (HEP) calculation sheets

Assessing Safety Actions (SAs)

HF screening for detailed assessment

Detailed Human Error Assessment (DHEA) reporting

Your skills and qualifications as a Human Factors Engineer:


Experience producing human factors reports

Degree in human factors/ergonomics/ psychology/ biomedical/ safety engineering or other relevant discipline

Knowledge of conducting human reliability analyses and Detailed Human Error Assessments (DHEA)

Experience of providing HF advice to a large project


Safety case knowledge

Nuclear industry experience or knowledge

Experience of HAZID activities
