The Opportunity
FPGA’s are one of the most crucial elements in many of our subsystems and our FPGA designers undertake the whole of the development process from negotiation of requirements and initial design architecture, through to the formal validation and verification of the design.  Many designs have demanding safety requirements so our engineers must be able to rigorously verify their designs and demonstrate this to the Safety Officers. This work is extremely challenging but incredibly rewarding.
The Role
FPGA’s are a critical element of our designs and are often complex and challenging.  Our designers, utilising the latest technologies form Xilinx, Actel etc..  are not just coders; they have the skills and capabilities to implement complex low level Image processing algorithms for Seekers to Actuator control functions and all shades in between.  Our designs often incorporate devices with processing cores and our designers have to establish close links with the Systems and Software design functions to get the most from these devices
What’s in it for you?
The range of demanding requirements, the use of the latest technologies and the expectations to deliver to demanding timescales provides a demanding environment for engineers who want to show they have a high performance attitude and the desire to reach the highest capability in this demanding field.
The scope to tackle technically demanding projects, develop new capabilities in all aspects, including leadership is an opportunity that should not be missed by any aspiring engineer.  Opportunities to progress to higher grades, including our formal Technical Expert grades provide further motivation for those particularly motivated by the technology route.
Technology in this area is advancing rapidly. To ensure we maintain our capability we join with our FPGA colleagues in France in preparing the next generation re-usable designs via demanding research programmes.
What’s great about the team?
The FPGA team is a functional team which is mostly collocated together, maximising the exchange of knowledge and ideas.  The team is always stretching the boundaries of the technology in response to ever growing demands for higher capability within our systems.
This team has to be agile to react to project demands such as specific features needed for trials. Only the most dedicated and adaptable engineers can meet these challenges.
This team has expanded rapidly over the past couple of years in response to a growing workload which continues to grow.
What are we looking for?
  • Ideally degree qualified or equivalent.
  • A thorough understanding of and completion of a reasonable number of complex FPGA designs based around Xilinx, Intel and Microsemi.
  • Proven capability in verification of such devices.
  • Experience with SytemVerilog would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the trends in FPGA technologies.
  • Competent use of various CAE Design tools (Xilinx ISE, Vivado, Libero, Quartus).
  • Inherent drive to gain and spread knowledge throughout the team and for the benefit of the team.
  • Ability to communicate and influence appropriately through presentations, verbally and via written reports.
  • Strong personal abilities with a focus on and desire to achieve the delivery of tasks to schedule.
What would you get?
Competitive salary, flexible working, paid overtime (subject to level), a comprehensive pension scheme, employee funded voluntary private healthcare, sporting activities, fantastic site facilities, bonus schemes (subject to level) and superb learning and development opportunities.

LinkedIn Group name: Engineering UK (Defence)

MBDA, a world leader in missiles and missile systems, is a multi-national group with 10,000 employees working across France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Spain and the United States. It has three major aeronautical and defence shareholders - Airbus Group (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%) and Finmeccanica (25%) - and is the first truly integrated European defence company. In 2013, the Group recorded a turnover of 2.8 billion euros, produced about 3,000 missiles and added 4 billion euros of new orders to the order book which now stands at 10.8 billion euros. MBDA works with over 90 armed forces worldwide.

MBDA was created in December 2001, after the merger of the main missile producers in France, Italy and the UK. Each of these companies contributed the experience gained from fifty years of technological and operational success. The restructuring of the industry in Europe was completed with the acquisition of the German subsidiary EADS/LFK in March 2006. This further enriched MBDA’s range of technologies and products, consolidating the Group’s world-leading position in the industry.

MBDA is the only Group capable of designing and producing missiles and missile systems to meet the whole range of current and future operational requirements for the three armed forces (army, navy, air force). Overall, the Group offers a range of 45 products in service and another 15 in development.

The Group has demonstrated its ability to bring together the best skills across the whole of Europe and as a result has been chosen to lead a series of strategic multi-national programmes. These include the six-nation Meteor air superiority weapon, the Franco-British conventionally armed cruise missile, Storm Shadow/SCALP, and a family of air defence systems based on the Aster missile for France and Italy (for ground and naval based air defence) and for the UK (naval air defence for the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers).

The mastery of cutting-edge technologies is not only an advantage for MBDA in successfully developing and producing new products. It is also a means of guaranteeing customers that innovations can be made to existing products during their life span in order to meet constantly changing specifications arising from increasingly complex engagement scenarios. It is precisely this combination which makes MBDA the defence sector partner of choice in many countries around the world.
